Midfielder who won the Copa do Brasil with Flamengo shines in Vietnam with a spectacular long-range goal.
At 35 years old, experienced midfielder Luiz Antonio, who had a notable stint with Flamengo and won the Copa do Brasil in 2013, has once again showcased his quality on the pitch. This time, the stage was Asian football, where he scored an extraordinary goal in Vietnam, paving the way for his team’s victory.
A product of the Rio de Janeiro club’s youth academy, Luiz Antonio has established himself as one of the standout players in V.League 1, the top tier of Vietnamese football. His most recent feat was a long-distance shot that caught the opposing goalkeeper off guard, a play that quickly went viral and is considered a strong contender for goal of the season.
From Ninho do Urubu to Asian Prominence
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Luiz Antonio joined Flamengo‘s youth ranks as a child at age 11. He made his professional debut in 2011 and quickly became an important piece of the squad that won the Copa do Brasil in 2013, as well as the Campeonato Carioca the following year.
His career in Brazil included spells with clubs such as Sport, Bahia, and Chapecoense, where he also had brilliant moments, including in international competitions like the Libertadores. Starting in 2018, the midfielder decided to explore the international market, playing for clubs in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Consistency and Leadership in Vietnam
Since 2023, Luiz Antonio has built a solid career in Vietnam. During his previous stint with Thanh Hoa, he was voted one of the best midfielders in the league, demonstrating his importance and versatility on the field by playing in different positions and contributing with goals and assists.
Now wearing the shirt of Hong Linh Ha Tinh, the player has reaffirmed his decisive ability. The 3-1 victory over reigning runners-up Viettel cemented his team’s strong run of form, collecting six points from three rounds.
The player stated in a post-match interview:
The important thing is that the team came away with the win. I’m happy to have contributed with a nice goal, but the main focus is always the team’s result.
Impact on V.League 1
Luiz Antonio‘s stunning goal not only secured all three points for Hong Linh Ha Tinh, but also served as a warning sign for Viettel. The team, looking to replicate last season’s performance, has accumulated just three points and sits in 11th place, which is already starting to pile pressure on the coaching staff.
The Brazilian’s performance reinforces the growing quality and competitiveness of Vietnamese football, which continues to attract foreign talent. V.League 1 pushes forward, and teams like Luiz Antonio‘s promise to fight for the top positions this season.
