Daniel Sales Gets Another Chance with Flamengo’s First Team During FIFA Break
The Flamengo squad resumed training this Tuesday (22), following their important victory over Bragantino last Sunday in the Brazilian Serie A. Upon returning to activities, head coach Leonardo Jardim integrated Daniel Sales, a promising young player from the youth academy, to cover for the absence of Guillermo Varela, who was called up to the Uruguay national team during the current FIFA international break.
This is not the first time Daniel Sales has been called up to join the professional squad. Varela‘s call-up opens another opportunity for the fullback to demonstrate his potential and seek a more permanent spot in the first team squad under Jardim‘s management.
Opportunity to Shine
Daniel Sales is part of a group of young athletes from the ‘rubro-negra’ youth academy who are undergoing a period of integration with the professional team. This dynamic allows players to gain experience and showcase themselves to the coach, hoping to secure their place in Flamengo‘s senior team. His versatility has been tested before, including under interim coach Filipe Luís, when he played out of position at left-back against Vasco in a State Championship match, delivering a good performance.
Experience and Sales Potential
Despite his youth, Daniel Sales is one of the most experienced players in Flamengo‘s U20 squad, coached by Marcelo Salazar. This season, the fullback participated in the club’s campaign in the U20 Copa Libertadores, held in Quito, Ecuador. His talent attracted attention from the European market, and during the last transfer window, Porto, from Portugal, even submitted an official offer. However, Flamengo considered the offered values too low and ended negotiations, signaling the club’s confidence in his potential.
Called-Up Players
In addition to Guillermo Varela, other Flamengo players have been called up to represent their national teams during this FIFA international break. Giorgian De Arrascaeta also joins Varela with Uruguay. The duo Pedro and Samuel Lino represent Brazil, while Anthony Valencia is on duty with Ecuador.

The period without official Brazilian Serie A matches will allow Flamengo to focus on the physical and mental recovery of its athletes, who have faced an intense run of games. Flamengo will only return to the field on October 8, when they will face Santos in the Brazilian Serie A. The match is scheduled for 7:30 PM (Brasília time) and will take place at Vila Belmiro Stadium.
