Flamengo took advantage of Palmeiras‘ slip-up in the 23rd round of the Brasileirão, narrowed the lead at the top, and saw their title projections jump, making the race tighter.

The battle for the top of the Brazilian Championship standings took a new turn after the conclusion of the 23rd round. On a Sunday of contrasts, Flamengo dominated Mirassol, scoring a resounding 5-1 victory away from home. In contrast, Palmeiras suffered an unexpected setback, losing 3-2 to Fluminense after a comeback at the Maracanã.

Since the league’s return after the World Cup break, the scenario has changed dramatically. While Palmeiras has been inconsistent, earning only seven out of a possible 15 points in that period, Flamengo has maintained a relentless pace. Undefeated since the restart, the Rubro-Negro has accumulated 11 points, shortening the gap to the top and raising an alert at the Palmeiras training ground.

Tight Title Race

Currently, Palmeiras sits atop the table with 48 points, while Flamengo is in second place with 45 points and a game in hand. This postponed match against Mirassol, with the date yet to be set by the CBF, is seen as a decisive advantage for Tite’s team in their pursuit of equal points.

The shift in the competitive landscape was confirmed by statistics from UFMG. Before the round, Palmeiras was the clear favorite with a 60.1% chance of winning the title; now, the scenario is almost a technical tie. Verdão holds a 43.7% probability, while Flamengo has climbed to 43%, a significant increase of 18 percentage points.

Other Contenders in the Top 4

Although the race appears polarized, other teams are still dreaming of the trophy. Athletico-PR, under the guidance of Odair Hellmann, emerges as the third force with an 8.9% chance. Cruzeiro, following an important victory over Corinthians, and Fluminense, which debuted well after Zubeldía’s departure, are trailing with 1.8% and 1.4% probability, respectively.

For the elite teams, focus now shifts to the Copa Libertadores. Palmeiras will face Cerro Porteño in Paraguay on Wednesday (19th), while Flamengo will decide its fate in the competition against Cruzeiro at the Maracanã.
