Flamengo shifts focus: Luiz Henrique becomes priority, Almada negotiations cool.
Flamengo has decided to prioritize the signing of Luiz Henrique, a forward from Zenit, over Thiago Almada, who was previously the club’s Plan A. This change in direction occurred after the Brazilian player agreed to the red-and-black project, making him the main target to strengthen the squad.
Shift in Transfer Market Strategy
Flamengo’s board understood that it could no longer wait indefinitely for a response from Thiago Almada, as this would impact other negotiations. Consequently, efforts were redirected towards acquiring Luiz Henrique, whose transfer fee might even exceed what would be required for the attacking midfielder.
In the current scenario, the Rio de Janeiro club does not believe it can finalize both operations simultaneously, unless more advantageous installment conditions and extremely favorable market opportunities arise.
A Long-Standing Dream Intensifies
Luiz Henrique has been a long-time target for Flamengo, with the club having shown interest even before his transfer to Botafogo. The player even met with red-and-black executives in Spain and expressed his appreciation for the management’s project.
At the time, financial infeasibility prevented progress. Now, the uncertainty surrounding Almada led the board to await the deadline stipulated for the Argentine’s staff before intensifying efforts to bring in Luiz Henrique.
Priorities and Urgency
The midfield and winger positions were identified as priorities by Leonardo Jardim. The development of Samuel Lino as a midfielder provided Flamengo with the necessary flexibility to shift the focus of the acquisition.
A crucial difference between the two targets is Luiz Henrique’s acceptance of the project, something that did not materialize with Almada, whose main obstacle was the financial aspect, even with Atlético de Madrid showing openness to negotiations.
The urgency to reinforce the team for the Copa Libertadores is also a determining factor, with the registration deadline for new players ending this Friday.
Negotiation Values and Conditions
Flamengo’s proposal for Luiz Henrique is around 30 million euros fixed, plus 5 million euros in bonuses, totaling approximately R$ 178 million, plus R$ 29 million. There is general optimism regarding the agreement, but Flamengo and Zenit are still debating the payment method.
While the Russians prefer an upfront payment, the Brazilian club aims for installments over approximately three years. Mengão’s interest in the player intensified after movements by other Brazilian clubs, which also sought information about the athlete. Zenit’s willingness to negotiate and Luiz Henrique’s immediate acceptance were crucial for the progress of the talks.
