Flamengo Leads Sports Betting Sponsorships in Brazilian Football; Government Debates Rules.
The financial landscape of Brazilian football in 2025 shows Flamengo as the undisputed leader in revenue from sports betting sponsorships. The Rio de Janeiro club earned an impressive R$ 269 million, representing 13% of its total annual revenue and half of the R$ 541 million generated by its marketing department. This survey, released by Sports Value, reveals clubs’ strong reliance on the sports betting market.
Revenue and Percentage Impact
The survey details that, in addition to Flamengo, other giants of Brazilian football also benefited significantly. Corinthians ranks second with R$ 150 million, followed by São Paulo, which accumulated R$ 113 million. The São Paulo club, despite being third in absolute terms, recorded the highest percentage impact, with R$ 113 million equaling 73% of its marketing revenue.
Palmeiras (R$ 100 million), Santos (R$ 70 million), Botafogo (R$ 55 million), Fluminense (R$ 52 million), and Vasco (R$ 50 million) complete the list of top beneficiaries.
The Betting Market and Debates in Brasília
Overall, the top twenty national football teams negotiated R$ 3.2 billion in marketing funds in 2025, with approximately R$ 1.1 billion originating from betting platforms, corresponding to 34% of the total. This scenario of strong financial injection comes at a delicate time, with the federal government, under the administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, evaluating the possibility of imposing stricter restrictions on the sector.
Government Considers Restrictions, Clubs Fear Impact
The discussion in Brasília gained momentum after ministerial meetings focused on debating proposals to limit the operation of virtual games, with a preference for preserving sports betting.
Despite this, President Lula has publicly expressed his intention to:
end betting
Suggesting that clubs need to find new revenue sources and that the measure would be beneficial for youth.
Concern is palpable among clubs, who fear the financial impact if betting companies are banned or severely limited, jeopardizing the sustainability of Brazilian football. The definition of new rules for the sports betting market is awaited with apprehension by the entire sports community.
