Flamengo forward Anthony Valencia took part in the penalty shootout between Ecuador and Japan during the Kirin Cup international friendly in Yokohama.
The Ecuador national team is currently undergoing a period of transition and adjustment under its new coaching staff. In a match held this Thursday (01) at the International Stadium Yokohama, the team faced the hosts as part of the traditional Kirin Cup, an exhibition tournament scheduled following the FIFA World Cup.
Flamengo-linked forward Anthony Valencia was called upon in the final stages of the match, coming off the bench in the 78th minute. The player showed composure under pressure by converting one of the penalties during the shootout, maintaining Ecuador’s perfect record in the spot-kicks, though the team could not avoid defeat against the Japanese side.
Match Dynamics
The game featured a more compact Ecuador compared to their previous outing. The team showed better organization in midfield, especially after second-half substitutions aimed at exploiting their numerical advantage and creative attacking options. However, finishing in the final third remained a recurring issue for the Ecuadorians.
Despite some attempts, such as a dangerous shot by Jordy Caicedo in the final minutes, the 0-0 scoreline held until the final whistle. Japan also struggled with precision, turning the match into a tactical battle with few real scoring opportunities.
Penalty Shootout
With no extra time, the winner was decided from the spot. The Japanese side was flawless, converting all five penalties through Ueda, Kamada, Ito, Soma, and Maeda. For Ecuador, in addition to Valencia, Jordy Caicedo, Alan Mina, and Jeremy Sarmiento found the back of the net. The only miss came from Denil Castillo, who was denied by goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.
The M360 Team noted:
“The Ecuadorian team, under the direction of Marcelo Gallardo, is looking to regain confidence following their poor debut against South Korea, intensifying preparations for upcoming international challenges.”
Ecuador now shifts its focus to the next match in their series of friendlies. Anthony Valencia‘s team will face Panama next Monday (05) at 3:30 AM (Brasília time), seeking a positive result to solidify the coach’s work during this rebuilding phase for the national squad.
