Flamengo has solidified its position among the powerhouses of South American football by securing a spot in the Libertadores semifinals. This Thursday (17), Mengão drew 1-1 with Independiente del Valle (ECU) at the Maracanã.
The result, added to the 2-0 victory in the first leg, confirmed the Rio club’s return to the penultimate stage of the competition for the fifth time in the last eight years.
The consistency of the Mais Querido in the continent’s premier tournament is impressive. Since 2019, the club has reached the decisive stages in 2019, 2021, 2022, 2025, and now 2026.
In this timeframe, the Rubro-Negro side has already lifted the trophy three times, reaffirming its absolute dominance in elite South American football.
A battle of resilience at the Maracanã
Unlike what was expected, the second leg was not a stroll for the Brazilian side. After building a lead in Ecuador, Flamengo saw their opponent open the scoring in the first half with a goal from Reasco.
The situation became dramatic in the second half, especially after the sending off of Jorginho, which left the hosts with ten men.
Independiente del Valle pressed hard and nearly extended their lead, having a goal ruled out for offside. However, Arrascaeta‘s star power shone in the final minutes.
Taking advantage of a massive blunder by goalkeeper Quintana following a long ball from Rossi, the Uruguayan headed the ball into the back of the net, securing the draw and easing the tension in the Maracanã stands.
Next steps in the Libertadores
With their spot secured, the focus of the squad and coaching staff now turns to Estudiantes (ARG). The Argentine club advanced by eliminating Corinthians and will be the Rubro-Negro’s opponent in the semifinals.
The matches are scheduled to take place in the weeks of October 14 and 21.
As Flamengo had the best overall campaign in the group stage, they will have the advantage of deciding the spot for the final at home in Rio de Janeiro.
The first leg, however, is still awaiting an official venue confirmation, as Estadio Uno in La Plata faces restrictions from CONMEBOL.
The road to a fifth title
The tournament bracket pits Palmeiras and Fluminense against each other for the other spot in the final. While the Alviverde side dispatched LDU, the Tricolor from Rio advanced by overcoming Platense (ARG).
The winner of this clash will be Flamengo‘s opponent in the grand final.
The title will be decided in a single match, scheduled for November 28, 2026, at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay.
With a strengthened squad and recent tradition in knockout stages, the Nação Rubro-Negra is already projecting the possibility of winning a fifth continental title.
