Flamengo Vetoes Maracanã for Vasco in Copa do Brasil Match; Rivalry Heats Up
Flamengo has denied Vasco‘s request for the Cruzmaltino club to host its Copa do Brasil quarter-final match against Vitória at the Maracanã. The first leg is scheduled for this Wednesday (26). The decision by the consortium that manages the stadium, ‘Fla-Flu’, was based on the current condition of the pitch, which is reportedly inadequate and could worsen with an additional match.
Maracanã Pitch Condition is Main Argument
The central argument for Flamengo‘s refusal was the quality of the Maracanã pitch. According to the consortium, the field is not in ideal condition, and an additional match could compromise its recovery for the Rubro-Negro’s future commitments. Faced with the denial, Vasco is now considering alternatives, including possible legal action or requesting the date from the Rio de Janeiro State Government.
Turbulent Relationship Between Clubs
The refusal comes amidst growing tension between Flamengo and Vasco. Recently, the Rubro-Negro activated the National Agency for the Regulation and Sustainability of Football (ANRESF) regarding rival negotiations and also questioned Vasco‘s financial health, as the club has been investing significantly in new signings. This escalation of distrust culminated in harsh public statements from Vasco‘s president, Pedrinho, against Flamengo’s leader, Bap, further deepening the rift between the clubs.
Vasco Seeks Attendance and Gate Revenue
Despite not ruling out playing at São Januário, Vasco showed a preference for the Maracanã. The main objective would be to maximize attendance and, consequently, revenue from ticket sales. However, Vasco‘s recent attendance history at the “Sacred Temple” and the comparison with Flamengo‘s expressive crowd raise doubts about the Cruzmaltino club’s ability to fill the stadium, even with its larger capacity.
The rivalry on the field extends behind the scenes, with the dispute over the use of one of Brazilian football’s main stages adding another chapter to the turbulent relationship between Flamengo and Vasco. The venue for Vasco‘s Copa do Brasil match now remains uncertain, as the clubs continue to be at odds.
