Flamengo has initiated a rigorous recovery schedule for the Maracanã pitch, resulting in Vasco being barred from playing at the stadium during this crucial maintenance week.

The Maracanã has entered a critical phase of pitch recovery. Following the match between Fluminense and Remo, held last Saturday (22), the maintenance team launched an intensive plan to restore the field to optimal conditions ahead of Flamengo‘s upcoming challenges. The break period, between August 23 and 29, was reserved exclusively for necessary repairs.

The decision to prioritize field care has caused repercussions behind the scenes. The Rubro-Negro prevented Vasco from hosting their Copa do Brasil clash against Vitória at the stadium this coming Wednesday (26). The justification was the necessity to preserve the pitch, a move upheld by Rio’s courts after the Cruzmaltino club had their injunction request denied.

Technology and intensive maintenance work

Greenleaf, the company responsible for pitch management, has implemented advanced strategies to combat the wear and tear caused by the high volume of matches and weather variations. Among the procedures being performed, highlights include ‘top dressing’—applying sand to level the soil—and repairing ‘divots,’ which are the marks left by players’ cleats.

Replanting in critical areas, such as the North goal box, has been underway since Monday (24). Furthermore, the team is utilizing artificial lighting with the SGL system to stimulate grass growth, along with de-compaction processes and foliar fertilization to strengthen the vegetation structure.

2026 Calendar and future challenges

The wear on the pitch in 2026 is a reflection of an extremely saturated calendar. To date, the premier stage of Rio football has already hosted over 70 matches, demanding redoubled conservation efforts. The goal is to provide a resilient and uniform pitch for the remainder of the season, which includes decisive fixtures for Flamengo.

In addition to football competitions, the stadium is preparing for the NFL Rio Game, between the Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Ravens, scheduled for September 27. The current care is also part of a long-term strategic plan, as the Maracanã is a strong candidate to host the opening match and the final of the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

The ongoing work aims to ensure that, following this intervention period, the pitch can withstand the marathon of events scheduled by management, maintaining the high standards required for major competitions, as reported by the M360 Team.
