Flamengo and Vasco lead the list of Brazilian clubs that have accumulated the most prize money from Conmebol up to the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, respectively.
The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) announced on Thursday the prize money amounts allocated to clubs that reached the semifinals of the current editions of the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana. The disclosure details each team’s financial earnings, highlighting the economic impact of advancing in the continent’s premier competitions.
Among the Brazilian representatives still in the running for continental titles, Flamengo, Palmeiras, Fluminense, Atlético-MG, and Vasco stand out. Flamengo, in particular, emerged as the club with the highest revenue in the Copa Libertadores so far, while Vasco leads the way in the Copa Sudamericana.
Libertadores Prize Money
In the Copa Libertadores, Flamengo leads the prize money ranking among the four semifinalists. The Rio de Janeiro club has already secured $9.61 million, equivalent to approximately R$ 49.88 million, consolidating its financially successful campaign.
Palmeiras appears in a very close position, having accumulated $9.27 million, about R$ 48.11 million. The difference between the two Brazilian giants is just $340,000, underlining the parity in financial performance.
Rounding out the Copa Libertadores semifinalists list, Fluminense and Estudiantes de La Plata from Argentina are tied in prize money. Each has guaranteed $8.93 million, approximately R$ 46.35 million, up to this stage of the competition.
The amounts released by the governing body take into account not only the stages reached by the teams, but also their sporting performance during the group stage. This means that wins and draws in earlier rounds contributed to the total amount.
Vasco Spotlights in the Copa Sudamericana
In the Copa Sudamericana, Vasco da Gama stands out as the semifinalist with the highest prize money so far. The club from São Januário has already accumulated $3.87 million, which corresponds to about R$ 20.09 million, for its journey in the tournament.
Montevideo City Torque from Uruguay occupies second place in the Copa Sudamericana with $3.73 million, or approximately R$ 19.36 million. Atlético-MG appears right behind, totaling $3.38 million, about R$ 17.54 million.
The fourth semifinalist of the Copa Sudamericana is Boca Juniors from Argentina. The team accumulated $2.6 million (about R$ 13.49 million) for its performance in this competition. However, it is important to note that Boca also received $3.68 million (approximately R$ 19.10 million) for its participation in the Copa Libertadores group stage.
Financial Impact and Future Projections
The amounts revealed by Conmebol are only a portion of the clubs’ earning potential in the competitions. The final stretch of the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana reserves significantly larger prizes for the winners and runners-up.
In the Copa Libertadores, the club that lifts the trophy will receive an additional $25 million, while the runner-up will get a bonus of $7 million. In the Copa Sudamericana, the champion will pocket $10 million, and the defeated finalist will take home $2.5 million.
These final sums represent a substantial boost for clubs seeking continental glory and the consequent reinforcement of their coffers, directly impacting planning for upcoming seasons and the capacity to invest in the squad and infrastructure.
