The consortium that manages Maracanã has undergone a management shake-up following internal and external pressure regarding the stadium’s pitch conditions.

The administration of Maracanã has undergone a drastic change in its executive leadership. The consortium formed by Flamengo and Fluminense has decided to dismiss Severiano Braga, who held the position of Director of Operations and Infrastructure.

The decision comes at a time of high technical demand on the sports complex, which has faced recurring criticism regarding the maintenance of the field.

To fill the vacancy, the management has chosen Luis Felipe de Barros. The new director already has a track record with the consortium, having previously served as president of the Supervisory, Management, and Operations Council.

More recently, he worked in the stadium’s contract management department. The change seeks to breathe new life into the arena’s maintenance, which has become a focal point of tension between clubs and administrators.

Behind the scenes of the restructuring

Severiano Braga had been a key figure at Maracanã since 2019, overseeing the start of the usage permit granted to the Fla-Flu duo. His departure marks the end of a management era that faced complex challenges.

The administration had been dealing with the mediation of tight schedules. It is worth noting that the stadium’s operations are a constant target of legal disputes, such as recent demands from Vasco da Gama to play matches at the venue.

Dissatisfaction with the quality of the pitch peaked following public statements from players. Flamengo defender Léo Pereira did not hold back criticism after the match against Cruzeiro in the Libertadores.

The player’s complaint reflected discontent that was already being addressed internally by the Rubro-Negro board, which monitors the wear and tear of the turf closely.

João Vítor Reis, from Coluna do Fla, commented on the situation:

People are being fired because of a bad pitch, and Vasco wants to play at Maracanã. Go figure. Tell them to ask to play at their friend Palmeiras’ Allianz Parque.

Impact on upcoming challenges

The Fla-Flu consortium hopes that the leadership change will bring greater technical rigor and efficiency to the pitch’s recovery.

With the season calendar entering a decisive phase, the state of the field is seen as fundamental to team performance and to Maracanã‘s reputation regarding continental competitions.

It remains to be seen whether the new management will be able to balance conservation requirements with the frantic match schedule.

The success of this transition will be measured in the coming weeks, a period in which the stadium will host high-profile matches of significant technical importance for the clubs involved.
