Paris Saint-Germain has officially signed left-back Lucas Digne, who arrives in the French capital under cautious scrutiny following a crucial mistake in the 2026 World Cup semifinals.

The European transfer market had barely cooled down after the World Cup final, and PSG was already shaking things up behind the scenes. The Parisian club confirmed the return of Lucas Digne, a 32-year-old left-back who was previously with Aston Villa. However, the player’s arrival is happening amidst unexpected pressure from the French fanbase.

The player was one of the main targets of criticism after the French national team‘s elimination in the tournament semifinals against Spain. Digne‘s error, which led to a penalty committed against starlet Lamine Yamal, negatively marked his participation in the competition, overshadowing his run as an undisputed starter throughout the six matches played.

The weight of the on-field mistake

The fateful moment that drew disapproval occurred inside the penalty area when the defender attempted a clearance, failed, and ended up fouling the Spanish attacker. The penalty was converted into a goal by Oyarzabal, sealing the French team’s fate.

Regarding expectations for the remainder of the season, the scenario at the Parc des Princes demands complete focus. According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the club paid approximately 10 million euros for the termination clause. The player arrives to sign a three-season contract, serving as the immediate backup to Nuno Mendes.

Return to his roots and new challenges

For Digne, wearing the PSG jersey is not new. The player represented the club between 2013 and 2015, making 44 appearances before moving on to giants like Barcelona and Roma. The accumulated experience, including the recent Europa League title with Aston Villa, is what the club is betting on to add depth to the squad.

The fans now hope the left-back can leave the World Cup trauma behind and regain his place. With the start of the next season, the pressure for results in international football will be the ultimate test for the veteran to prove he still has the required level for the sport’s elite.
