A recent court ruling has authorized the use of the Maracanã stadium for the match between Vasco and Boca Juniors, forcing Flamengo to adjust its basketball team’s schedule.
The legal battle over the use of the Maracanã saw a new chapter unfold this Tuesday (13). Judge Joaquim Domingos de Almeida Neto reconsidered a previous decision and authorized the Copa Sudamericana semifinal match between Vasco da Gama and Boca Juniors to take place at the stadium.
To make the football match possible, the magistrate imposed a logistical condition: the game between Flamengo and Botafogo, part of the Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB) and scheduled for October 20 at the Maracanãzinho, must be moved. The change aims to prevent the merging of fan crowds in the sports complex area.
Contractual weight and security
Vasco’s defense based their request on a clause in the complex’s concession agreement, which grants priority to football matches over other types of events. This argument was key to reversing the initial denial from the concessionaire, Fla-Flu Serviços S.A., which had cited operational risks and the need to preserve the pitch following recent renovations.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office of the State of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ), represented by Prosecutor-General Antonio José Campos Moreira, reinforced the feasibility of the event. The agency highlighted that security and urban mobility planning were already in place, accounting for the sale of over 46,000 tickets for the continental clash.
The judicial order is clear in requiring authorities to organize the calendar to avoid overlapping crowds, ensuring that the basketball game does not interfere with the security logistics of the football match.
Developments and future scheduling
Although the ruling favors the match taking place at the Maracanã, the legal dispute remains under review by the Special Body of the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro. Meanwhile, Flamengo must deal with a tight schedule: in addition to the NBB, the club will host Estudiantes on October 22 for the Libertadores, which also requires careful attention to pitch maintenance and CONMEBOL inspections.
The requirement to change the time or location of the basketball derby puts pressure on NBB organizers. To date, the Rubro-Negro has not yet confirmed which alternative will be chosen, but the need to adjust the logistics of the Maracanãzinho is immediate to ensure normalcy in the vicinity of the stadium during the event date.
