Conmebol Fines Flamengo and Leonardo Jardim for Libertadores Delay
Conmebol has officially sanctioned Flamengo and coach Leonardo Jardim with financial penalties following disciplinary infractions during the first leg of the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals. The sanctions stem from delays in resuming play after halftime in the match where the Rubro-Negro defeated Independiente Del Valle 2-0 in Quito.
The primary reason for the penalties was the team’s late return to the field for the second half. According to the governing body’s disciplinary code, this infraction incurs significant fines: $60,000 (approximately R$304,000) for the club and $40,000 (approximately R$206,000) for the Portuguese manager.

The sanctions are based on Article 2 of the entity’s disciplinary code, which directly holds officials and players responsible for the late start of the second half. In addition to this issue, the Mais Querido received an additional warning for non-compliance with regulations related to interviews with broadcast rights holders and mixed zone procedures after the final whistle.

Financial Impact and Appeals

Although the decision has been officially communicated, the legal department of the Rio de Janeiro-based club is still analyzing the possibility of filing an appeal to attempt to overturn or reduce the sanctions imposed by the South American governing body.

With qualification secured after the draw at the Maracanã, Flamengo‘s focus now shifts to the Libertadores semifinals. The challenge will be against Estudiantes of Argentina, in a matchup that promises to be decisive for the club’s aspirations this season.
