Experiences amidst childhood shootouts shield Emerson Royal from criticism at Flamengo, turning him into a standout in the Libertadores.
Emerson Royal‘s journey at Flamengo has been marked by remarkable resilience, forged long before his arrival on the professional football scene. Frequently the target of fan criticism, the right-back has shown an unusual ability to ignore detractors, bolstered by a past of overcoming adversity. His recent performances in the Copa Libertadores, especially in the 1-1 draw against Cruzeiro, have silenced critics and reaffirmed his value to the red-and-black squad.
The player, who underwent intensive physical preparation for the 2026 season, was a surprising choice by coach Leonardo Jardim for the right-back position in the first leg of the round of 16. Despite initial doubts, Royal stood out on the pitch at the Mineirão, proving the coaching staff’s confidence was justified.
Harsh Reality Forging the Athlete
In a candid revelation, Emerson Royal shared that his childhood amidst favela shootouts and basic hardships, such as lacking food, prepared him for life’s challenges, including the pressure of high-level football.
“Where I came from, I came out mature. My life wasn’t easy. I’ve lived through shootouts, not having enough to eat, in the favela. I didn’t have opportunities. I managed to leave and seek a better life for my family. That’s already a victory. Everyone talks. If even Neymar is questioned, why wouldn’t I be? What comes from outside won’t affect me,”Emerson Royal stated in an interview with ‘GE’. He added that the criticism indicates potential.
“Nobody picks on someone who doesn’t have potential. If they pick on me, it’s a sign that I can play more and improve. That’s what I try to take positively. I believe the most difficult moment in terms of criticism was at Flamengo, but I tried to keep my head straight. To get out of that phase, there was only one way: work. And that’s exactly what I did.”
Strategy and Opportunities: Royal’s Return
Leonardo Jardim‘s preference for a more physically robust team in the Libertadores has benefited Emerson Royal, giving him an advantage over Varela in the competition for a starting spot. The expectation is that the player will return to the starting lineup this Wednesday (19) for the decisive clash against Cruzeiro at the Maracanã. This match holds special significance for Royal, recalling his debut as a starter for Atlético-MG in 2018, also against Raposa, where he had a memorable performance in a 1-0 victory.
“I remember that game, it was my debut as a starter for Galo. There was a lot of pressure on us. We were going through an up-and-down period, I came in as a starter, had a great game, and we won 1-0. (Cruzeiro) is an opponent I’ve faced before when I played for Atlético-MG. We know the difficulty they try to impose, but we will fight for the win,” the athlete recalled.
National Team Dream and Tactical Evolution
One of Emerson Royal‘s main motivations for playing at Flamengo is the ambition to return to the Brazil national team. Although he hasn’t been called up by Carlo Ancelotti yet, the hope of wearing the ‘Canarinho’ jersey remains strong.
“The Brazil national team is a dream, I came to Flamengo chasing that spot. I have that dream, I want to be back on the radar, and I have the potential for it. With the help of my teammates, that time will come,” he stated. He also emphasized his commitment: “I gave up 70% of my vacation to work, and I believe God will repay me. Since the beginning of the year with Filipe Luís, who was giving me a lot of confidence. Jardim developed my transition game, and I still have a lot to improve.”
Regarding his style on the field, Royal describes a game of surprise and strength:
“It’s a slightly different way of playing, a game where I come from deeper. There’s a winger who closes inside, and I go on the outside. That element of surprise. I had a coach at Ponte Preta who used to say I’m a player who arrives, not one who stays back. That strength is my main characteristic, which is why I’m standing out.”
Overcoming Adversity and Focus on Titles
Despite moments of inconsistency, including an injury and the lack of a preseason, Emerson Royal has always maintained confidence in his potential. Criticism was viewed as fuel for improvement.
“I usually say that there are difficult moments, but everything is a learning experience. I had a period of inconsistency when I arrived. I had an injury, I didn’t have a preseason, I wasn’t 100% physically. I understood the moment, the criticism. But I always knew my potential, the player I always was, the clubs I played for. I took that criticism and evolved. I won two very important titles, which I dreamed of. I wanted to win the Libertadores and the Brasileirão, and it doesn’t stop there. Hopefully, this year will be the best yet.”
Emerson Royal‘s life story, marked by overcoming extreme adversity, gives him a unique perspective on pressure and criticism in football. With a focus on work and improvement, the full-back has become a key player for Flamengo in their pursuit of more titles, starting with the crucial clash against Cruzeiro in the Libertadores. The decisive match will take place at 9:30 PM (Brasília time) at the Maracanã.
