São Paulo has made midfielder Newton official until 2029, following a complex negotiation twist involving defender Nahuel Ferraresi.

São Paulo made a significant move in the transfer market by announcing the arrival of 26-year-old midfielder Newton. The player has signed a long-term contract with Tricolor Paulista, extending until December 2029, a strategic step to strengthen the team’s midfield. The official announcement is expected in the coming hours, confirming the new signing.

Newton‘s arrival represents not only a technical addition but also the conclusion of a nuanced negotiation. His presence at the CT da Barra Funda is already a reality, following a series of medical examinations and the formalization of all necessary documentation for his immediate integration into the squad.

The Complex Negotiation with Botafogo

The transaction that brought Newton to São Paulo went through moments of intense negotiation. Initially, the management of São Paulo and Botafogo had reached an agreement involving a direct exchange: Newton would move to Tricolor Paulista, and defender Nahuel Ferraresi, who is on loan to the Rio de Janeiro club, would have his permanent rights transferred to Alvinegro.

However, the situation changed drastically in recent days. Ferraresi opted not to accept the permanent transfer to Botafogo, even with Newton already in São Paulo. This setback forced a complete restructuring of the deal’s terms, demonstrating the volatility of the transfer market and the clubs’ adaptability.

New Format: Future Implications

With Ferraresi‘s refusal, the terms of Newton‘s signing were redefined. The midfielder will play for São Paulo in 2026 without any immediate financial compensation to Botafogo for now. The final outcome of the negotiation will depend on future decisions concerning the Venezuelan defender.

The definitive conclusion will occur at the end of Nahuel Ferraresi‘s loan spell with Botafogo in December of this year. Should the Rio de Janeiro club decide to exercise its option to purchase the defender, Ferraresi‘s stay at Botafogo will be “exchanged” for Newton‘s permanent rights at Tricolor Paulista. However, if Alvinegro chooses not to keep the defender, São Paulo will purchase Newton‘s economic rights for 3.5 million euros, equivalent to approximately R$ 20.4 million, a sum to be paid in installments by the end of the contract.

A Request from Dorival Júnior

Newton‘s arrival fulfills a long-standing and priority request from the board and technical staff of São Paulo. The need to strengthen the midfield was seen as essential for the remainder of the season and for the club’s ambitions. The midfielder’s signing was, in fact, a direct request from coach Dorival Júnior, who sees the player as having an important tactical and technical profile for the team.

The investment in the 26-year-old midfielder demonstrates São Paulo‘s planning in seeking players who fit the team’s playing philosophy and bring more solidity and dynamism to the sector. With Newton now integrated, Tricolor Paulista strengthens its squad for the upcoming challenges, aiming for the balance and competitiveness sought in the Brazilian football season.
