The political crisis at the top of world football is intensifying: after backing down from a multi-billion dollar private investment plan, FIFA president Gianni Infantino is facing severe backlash from UEFA.

Gianni Infantino’s administration at FIFA is experiencing a period of unprecedented turmoil. Even after the official announcement that the project to bring private capital into the commercial structure of the World Cup had been scrapped, the executive failed to quell the outrage from continental governing bodies. UEFA has been the most vocal critic, publicly declaring that the current leadership of world football’s governing body has lost the trust of the European bloc.

UEFA’s dissatisfaction, which even led to speculation of a widespread boycott of FIFA competitions, is rooted in the lack of transparency surrounding the process. According to the European body, the project was conducted through a “shady, behind-the-scenes deal,” contradicting the promises of open management made by Infantino since he took office in 2016.

A retreat under pressure

The abandonment of the plan came just hours after the negative backlash reached a global scale. The project aimed to create the FFE (FIFA Forward Enterprise), a subsidiary to manage revenues from events such as the Club World Cup and the World Cup, with projected earnings of up to $4.2 billion. The immediate impact would have been a robust financial infusion for the 211 member associations, which, in the view of critics such as former advisor Carlos Cordeiro—who resigned last week—would compromise the long-term future of the sport.

The European governing body stated in an official release:

The current FIFA leadership has not only lost the confidence of UEFA but also that of many other members of the football family.

Global resistance and Infantino’s future

Opposition to Infantino’s plan was not limited to Europe. The AFC (Asian Football Confederation) and Concacaf also expressed their repudiation of how the proposal was presented, demanding more democratic discussion processes. Even Conmebol, whose president Alejandro Domínguez is a long-time ally of the Italian-Swiss executive, demanded detailed clarifications regarding the project’s governance.

The situation calls into question the reelection of Infantino, who until now was heading toward an uncontested race. In an attempt to contain the crisis, the FIFA president promised to seek a new path to “restore harmony.”

The M360 Team will continue to monitor the developments of this crisis, which is set to dominate upcoming council meetings and define the political direction of international football for the 2027-2030 cycle.
