São Paulo strengthens its defensive line and is set to sign Portuguese center-back Domingos Duarte, who will ink a two-season deal with the Morumbi club.

Fans of the Tricolor Paulista have reason to celebrate the club’s latest moves in the transfer market. São Paulo has reached an agreement to sign 31-year-old Portuguese center-back Domingos Duarte. The defender, arriving to bolster the squad managed by Dorival Jr, is expected to be officially announced in the coming days.

The negotiations, led by football manager and former captain Rafinha, required significant persistence. After previous unsuccessful attempts with the player’s representatives, the São Paulo board managed to seal a two-season contract. The strategy aligns with the club’s push to target players available on free transfers, a savvy alternative given the club’s current financial climate.

Targeting free agents has been a key asset for the management to improve the roster without straining the budget. The profile of Domingos Duarte, who brings experience and international pedigree, was viewed as the ideal piece to add security to the backline for the remainder of the Brazilian Serie A.

“The contract will run for two seasons, and the deal followed the same model as other Tricolor Paulista targets in the market: seeking out free agents, given the club’s financial situation.”

Continuing the transfer window

The club had already kicked off this window on July 1st with the signing of forward Victor Sá, formerly of Botafogo. The player, who had been without a club since his stint in Russian football, is already participating in training sessions at the Barra Funda training complex.

Now, São Paulo‘s focus shifts to other priorities. In addition to Domingos Duarte, the club remains in active talks for other targets, including defensive midfielder Newton and right-back Aurélio Buta. With the squad gaining new options, the Tricolor aims to remain competitive for the challenges ahead this season.
