Spain’s historic defensive wall has finally crumbled: after 656 minutes without conceding, the Spanish national team let in a goal against Belgium, setting a new World Cup record.

The record that seemed unbreakable has finally been shattered. In a decisive 2026 World Cup quarterfinal matchup at SoFi Stadium, Spain conceded for the first time in years. Charles De Ketelaere’s goal in the 41st minute ended a scoreless streak that lasted an impressive 656 minutes, etching the Spanish defense into FIFA tournament history.

The end of an era between the posts

The protagonist of this defensive feat was goalkeeper Unai Simón. A permanent starter for La Roja since the Qatar World Cup, the Athletic Bilbao keeper was the sole guardian throughout the entire historic run. The solidity of Simón and his defensive unit surpassed the previous record of 559 minutes, held by Switzerland since the period between the 1994 and 2010 editions.

Spain’s unbeaten run began during the group stage of the 2022 World Cup. Following a loss to Japan, Spain began an impeccable journey. The streak included high-tension duels, such as their match against Morocco, in addition to a solid campaign in the current edition, featuring victories over Saudi Arabia, Uruguay, Austria, and a strategic draw against Cape Verde.

The legacy of the record

The previous record held by the Swiss stood as a benchmark of endurance for 36 years. Switzerland’s streak began after conceding a goal against Spain in 1994, lasting nearly two decades before being broken by Chile in the 2010 tournament.

Although the draw with Belgium changes the outlook for the remainder of the match and the fight for a semifinal spot, Spain leaves the pitch knowing they have written their name into sporting history. However, the impact of that defensive solidity is now in the past; Unai Simón’s squad must refocus for the upcoming knockout stage challenges, where any mistake can be fatal in the pursuit of the world title.
