Atlético-MG has officially announced the arrival of Léo Duarte. The defender, who brings international experience from his time at AC Milan and Flamengo, has signed a contract with Galo through 2030 following a stint in Turkey.
The Atlético faithful have a new name to bolster their defensive line. On Wednesday, Atlético-MG confirmed the signing of 29-year-old defender Léo Duarte. The player, formerly with Başakşehir in Turkey, arrived in Belo Horizonte earlier this week to undergo routine medical examinations and finalize his commitment to the Minas Gerais club.
The deal, which brings an experienced athlete into Eduardo Domínguez‘s squad, was completed on a free transfer as the defender’s contract in Turkey had expired. With a long-term deal running until 2030, the club’s board is signaling its confidence in the consistency of a player who has gained experience on the global stage.
Competition in the Galo Defense
The arrival of Léo Duarte raises the level of competition in Galo‘s defensive unit. Currently, the team has Ruan Tressoldi firmly established as a starter, but the new signing will be tasked with fighting for his place against players such as Lyanco, Vitor Hugo, and young prospect Ivan Román.
“Defensive solidity is one of the pillars for Atlético-MG‘s ambitions in the remaining competitions this season. With so many options available, the head coach will have the freedom to adjust the back line according to the needs of each match,” experts note regarding the squad assembly.
Background and Career of Léo Duarte
A product of the Desportivo Brasil youth system, Léo Duarte rose to national prominence wearing the Flamengo shirt. With the Rubro-Negro, he was part of historic moments, serving as a key piece during the 2019 season, which culminated in titles in both the Brazilian Serie A and the Libertadores. This experience in championship-winning locker rooms is viewed with optimism by the club’s supporters.
Following his time in Brazilian football, the defender was transferred to the prestigious AC Milan in Italy. Although he did not find the consistency he sought in Europe, he eventually found stability at Başakşehir. He spent six seasons on Turkish soil, racking up over 200 official appearances, providing Léo Duarte with the maturity needed to take on the challenge of wearing the Atlético-MG jersey.
Expectations are now centered on the player’s integration into the squad. With this reinforcement, Galo deepens its roster for the season’s challenges, seeking the consistency required to keep the club’s spirit alive in every match on the pitch.
