Claudinho reinforces that Zenit blocked his move to Flamengo, detailing behind-the-scenes aspects of the failed negotiation that nearly changed the course of South American football.
The saga surrounding attacking midfielder Claudinho‘s potential transfer to Flamengo has gained new chapters following statements from the player himself. Currently playing for Al-Sadd in Qatar, the player once again pointed to Zenit of Russia as the main obstacle to his return to Brazilian football.
The player confirmed that personal terms and the agreement with the Rubro-Negro board were practically finalized. However, the Russian leadership’s resistance to negotiating his transfer decisively weighed on the end of talks, frustrating the Rio de Janeiro club’s plans to reinforce their midfield with the Brazilian talent.
Behind the Scenes of the Failed Negotiation
Flamengo‘s attempts to secure the playmaker spanned across different transfer windows. The most intense moment occurred in mid-2024, when the board led by then-president Rodolfo Landim went as far as treating the agreement as imminent, with announcement materials already produced behind the scenes at Gávea.
Despite the initial verbal agreement, the European club backed out at the last minute and chose to extend the player’s contract until mid-2028. Faced with the stalemate, the football department shifted its focus and invested in the signing of Argentine Carlos Alcaraz from Southampton, making it the most expensive transaction in the club’s history at that time.
Claudinho stated:
Zenit didn’t release me. I wanted to leave, to return to Brazil, everything was almost working out, but Zenit didn’t want to let me go. I was practically agreed with Flamengo, but they didn’t want to release me.
New Career Directions and Future Scenario
His permanent departure from Russian football only took place in January 2025, when Al-Sadd acquired the player’s rights. Before the outcome with Qatari football, clubs like Palmeiras also attempted to repatriate the midfielder, without success against the financial demands of the Russians.
With a contract valid with the Middle Eastern club until 2029, Claudinho continues to be monitored by the domestic market. Recently, teams like Santos, the player’s boyhood club, probed the possibility of a loan, keeping alive expectations of a potential return to Brazil in future seasons.
