Zico reacts to criticism about Maracanã’s pitch and compares it to his playing days
Flamengo‘s recent qualification for the Libertadores semifinals has reignited a recurring debate: the state of the Maracanã stadium’s pitch. The condition of the playing surface, which has drawn complaints from players of various clubs, especially Flamengo and Fluminense, has gained a new perspective with the opinion of Zico, the greatest idol in the club’s history.
At an event this Saturday (19), Zico acknowledged that the Maracanã pitch is not in its best shape. His concern about the situation even influenced the decision not to confirm the traditional ‘Jogo das Estrelas’ (All-Star Game), a charity event he usually organizes. In a lighthearted manner, the eternal number 10 drew a humorous comparison to his playing days.
Pitch under debate:
Zico stated:
Is the All-Star Game going to happen? I don’t know yet, the pitch is bad. But comparing it to the times I played, the pitch as it is today is a carpet (laughs).
Dissatisfaction with the stadium’s playing surface is not new. Players such as Rossi, Léo Ortiz, and Emerson Royal publicly expressed their concerns after the match against Del Valle (ECU) last Thursday (17). For them, the poor maintenance of the pitch directly affects Flamengo‘s playing style, which aims to impose a game of ball possession and quick passes.
Upcoming challenges and the NFL’s impact:
In addition to the already intense game schedule of the season, the Maracanã will need to adapt to hosting an American football game (NFL) next week. This change further heightens expectations regarding the pitch’s recovery capacity and how it will perform in upcoming fixtures.
Despite the difficulties, Flamengo is preparing for its last home game before the FIFA International break. This Sunday (20), Mengão faces Red Bull Bragantino in the Brazilian Serie A at 6:30 PM (Brasília time). The match will be fully covered by the M360 team and broadcast on SporTV and Premiere.
Zico‘s statement adds a historical perspective to the debate about the Maracanã pitch. While current players point to the surface as a hindrance, the Flamengo idol recalls times when playing conditions were considerably more adverse. The expectation now rests on the pitch’s improvement and the impact the American football game will have on the already criticized ‘Sacred Temple’.
