Vitória faces a defensive crisis for its upcoming match against Flamengo in the Brazilian Serie A, following key ejections in the Bahia team’s last outing.
Flamengo is preparing for a decisive clash in the 22nd round of the Brazilian Championship, scheduled for August 9th. While the Rubro-Negro seeks to return to winning ways, their opponent, Vitória, arrives at the Maracanã stadium embroiled in a true defensive drama.
Following the heavy 4-0 defeat to Palmeiras last Wednesday (29th), coach Jair Ventura will face serious problems assembling his defensive lineup. Starting defenders Luan Cândido and Cacá were ejected in the match and are therefore automatically suspended for the game against Mais Querido (Flamengo’s nickname).
The situation for the Bahia-based team is critical. With the suspension of the defensive pair, Emanuel Brítez is the only recognized center-back available in the main squad. Faced with this scenario, the coaching staff will have to find emergency solutions, which may include improvising players from other positions or promoting someone from the youth academy to fill the gap in the defense.
On the Flamengo side, the need for a victory is urgent. The Gávea club is experiencing a period of inconsistency, coming off two consecutive draws: 1-1 against São Paulo at the Maracanã, and the same scoreline against Internacional at Beira-Rio. This streak has allowed Palmeiras, the sole leader with 47 points, to build a considerable lead over the Rubro-Negro, who occupies second place with 39 points.
Leonardo Jardim’s squad is using the break in competitions — due to the Copa do Brasil round of 16 — to finalize adjustments. It’s worth remembering that Fla is no longer competing in the knockout tournament, having been eliminated by Vitória in the previous phase. After winning the first leg 2-1, the Rio de Janeiro team lost 2-0 at Barradão.
