The debut of Joaquín Freitas for Flamengo was marked by a controversial moment: a harsh tackle by Remo’s Marcelinho, which sparked outrage among fans and raised questions about the officiating.

Flamengo‘s 1-0 victory over Remo this Sunday (06), in the 26th round of the Brazilian Serie A, was overshadowed by controversy involving the new Rubro-Negro signing. Just minutes after stepping onto the pitch for his debut, Argentine forward Joaquín Freitas suffered a violent tackle to his ankle, an incident that infuriated Flamengo fans due to the leniency of the officiating crew.

Despite the apparent severity of the foul committed by Marcelinho in the 75th minute, referee Lucas Casagrande chose to show only a yellow card. The decision, which saw no intervention from VAR official Heber Roberto Lopes, allowed the opposing player to remain on the field until the final whistle, reigniting debates over the disciplinary criteria used in the competition.

The arrival of an Argentine gem

Joaquín Freitas arrived in Rio de Janeiro last Monday (31) as one of the major bets for the Mais Querido‘s attack. Signed from River Plate (ARG), the 21-year-old talent signed a long-term contract running through 2031 and will wear the number 30 jersey. The forward, considered one of the brightest prospects in Argentine football, highlighted the grandeur of the club’s facilities and the immediate impact of the fan base.

“The truth is, it’s a beautiful club with top-tier facilities—it’s on another level. When I saw the training center, I thought it was insane. Even though it was something I expected, I was very surprised. And upon arriving here in Rio, the number of Flamengo fans is impressive,”Joaquín Freitas stated regarding his first impressions of the club.

Focus on the Libertadores

Despite the scare during his Brazilian Serie A debut, the forward remains in the coaching staff’s plans for upcoming challenges. Flamengo is now shifting its focus to the Libertadores clash. Next Thursday (10), the team will face Independiente del Valle (EQU) in Quito for the first leg of the quarterfinals.

The expectation is that Freitas will earn more minutes on the pitch, with the chance to experience his first continental competition for the Rio club. The match, scheduled for 9:30 PM (Brasilia time), will be an important test for the squad as they look to advance in the hunt for the South American title.
