Matías Viña’s future at River Plate is uncertain and could redefine Flamengo’s plans for the crucial left-back position this transfer window.

Flamengo‘s search for a high-profile left-back is heating up the transfer market, and a familiar name is back on their radar: Matías Viña. The player, currently on loan at River Plate, is experiencing an uncertain period that could directly impact the Rubro-Negro‘s strategies for the remainder of the season.

The Uruguayan’s situation in Argentina is far from comfortable. With limited opportunities and performances that have failed to convince fans and the coaching staff, the possibility of an unexpected return to the Rio de Janeiro club is gaining traction and demands maximum attention from the Mais Querido‘s board.

The Scenario in Buenos Aires

Since his arrival at River Plate, Viña has struggled to establish himself. The left-back, who sought more playing time to arrive in better form for the World Cup with the Uruguay national team, faced a reality of being on the bench and performing below expectations. Criticism from the Argentine press has been strong, indicating he is not in coach Eduardo Coudet‘s plans.

However, a potential contract termination with the Argentinians would involve costs. River Plate would be obliged to pay a breach of contract fee, in addition to being responsible for paying the player’s salary until December. It’s a contractual entanglement that Flamengo is closely monitoring.

Seeking Match Rhythm for the World Cup

In an interview with FIFA before Uruguay‘s World Cup debut, Viña expressed his reasons for the move:

It was an important step to decide to go to River, to seek a bit more continuity, which I wasn’t getting at Flamengo due to my injury and the number of full-backs we had in the position. And I tried to find that. I left thinking about the World Cup, trying to arrive with a bit more rhythm than I had at Flamengo. So I tried to find continuity to arrive in the best possible way for the national team and secure my place in the World Cup.

Despite his intention, the on-field scenario was different, with only 14 games played and 10 as a starter, far from the desired regularity.

Mengão’s Options

The left-back position is, in fact, one of Flamengo‘s priorities this transfer window. In addition to Viña, the Rio de Janeiro club is holding talks for Alex Sandro‘s renewal until the end of 2027. Ayrton Lucas also has a valid contract, and at the moment, there are no movements for his departure. Viña‘s contract with Flamengo, valid until 2028, means he is a valuable asset for the club.

Matías Viña‘s situation at River Plate is a potential turning point for Flamengo‘s planning. With an underperformance in Argentina and the imminent possibility of a contractual decision, the possibility of his return to Ninho do Urubu cannot be ruled out. Mengão needs to act intelligently and passionately, monitoring every step of this transfer market to ensure that the left-back position lives up to the club’s greatness, whether with a promising return or a new acquisition that further elevates the standard of the Rio de Janeiro team.
