The political crisis in global soccer intensifies: even after FIFA backed down on a privatization project, UEFA hardens its stance and maintains its boycott warning for its competitions.

Tension between the two highest governing bodies of soccer is far from resolved. Although FIFA announced last week that it would drop the creation of the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) — an initiative aimed at attracting private investment to commercially manage major tournaments like the World CupUEFA does not consider the measure sufficient to end the political stalemate.

Demand for Formal Guarantees

FIFA President Gianni Infantino acknowledged the criticisms and apologized for the handling of the process, which generated strong rejection among European executives. However, the European confederation demands more concrete steps before ruling out any type of retaliation.

UEFA emphasizes that simply abandoning the project is not enough. The entity seeks formal guarantees that similar proposals, aimed at excessive commercialization and what they call the “disfigurement” of the game, will not be presented again in the future. Furthermore, there is an atmosphere of institutional distrust regarding FIFA‘s current governance.

Impact on Upcoming Competitions

“The countries affiliated with UEFA were very clear about the conditions associated with non-participation in FIFA competitions. It is necessary to ensure that such attempts to disfigure the game in this way never happen again,” the entity stated in an official announcement.

The crisis began with the unanimous approval of the 55 European federations, who see commercial centralization as a risk to the traditional control of the sport. The first major test for this conflict already has a date set: the U-20 Women’s World Cup, to be held in September in Poland, appears as the first tournament under real risk of withdrawals.

If the parties do not reach a diplomatic agreement soon, the domino effect could compromise the technical integrity of future events, including upcoming editions of the men’s World Cup. Follow more updates on this scenario at M360.
