The STJD sets penalties for Vitória and Palmeiras players following controversy at Barradão.

The Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) handed down its decisions this Tuesday regarding the controversial incidents during the match between Vitória and Palmeiras, which took place last month in the Brazilian Serie A. The game, marked by red cards and complaints from the Bahia-based club regarding the officiating, had its repercussions analyzed, resulting in lighter sentences than those initially feared by the Prosecutor’s Office.

Penalties set for Vitória duo

Defender Cacá, from Vitória, received a one-game suspension, decided unanimously. He was sent off in the first half following a tackle deemed reckless on John Arias. The player was charged under Article 254 of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice (CBJD), which refers to violent play. The referee’s report described the action as a tackle with the studs up and excessive force.

Luan Cândido receives minimum suspension

Luan Cândido, a fullback for Vitória, also had his situation judged. Initially, the player was facing charges for a gesture interpreted as accusing the officials of theft, which could have led to a more severe penalty. However, the tribunal opted to reclassify the more serious charge and filed it under Article 258 of the CBJD, regarding unsportsmanlike conduct. Consequently, his punishment was limited to a one-match ban.

Palmeiras’ Maurício receives a warning and is cleared

Midfielder Maurício, from Palmeiras, had his case judged regarding an incident with defender Cacá. While initially charged with violent play, his suspension was converted into a simple warning. As a result, Maurício remains available to the coaching staff and will be able to play normally in the upcoming rounds, starting with the clash against Internacional.

Vitória fined by the STJD

In addition to the individual punishments, Esporte Clube Vitória was penalized with a fine of R$ 10,000. The conviction stemmed from a violation of Article 191 of the CBJD, which deals with non-compliance with regulations.

The outcome at the STJD brings relief to Palmeiras, who will have their midfielder on the pitch, while Vitória will be without two of their players for one match. The definition of the penalties aims to maintain balance and discipline in the competitions without excessively harming the teams during crucial moments of the Brazilian Serie A.
