In a candid interview following the victory over Bragantino, midfielder Saúl expressed his frustration with his limited playing time at Flamengo and admitted he may look for a fresh start at the end of the season.
Saúl‘s tenure at Flamengo has reached a pivotal moment. Although he emphasized his happiness in Rio de Janeiro and his family’s desire to remain at the club, the Spanish midfielder did not hide his dissatisfaction with the lack of opportunities under manager Leonardo Jardim. He spoke out in the mixed zone at the Maracanã, shortly after playing a full 90 minutes—a feat he hadn’t achieved since last year.
The number 8 stressed the need for consistency to regain his rhythm and play a leading role in the squad. Having appeared in only 13 matches in 2026, with just three starts, the player acknowledges that his physical conditioning suffers from prolonged inactivity, though he guarantees his full commitment to the team’s seasonal objectives.
A vent on valuation and the transfer market
When addressing his contract situation and future prospects, Saúl was straightforward about the possibility of leaving. The player understands that if he cannot find the playing time he desires, seeking a new destination will be the logical path for his career.
“If there’s a good opportunity and you aren’t playing, I think it’s best for the team and for everyone if I leave. (…) Because then people say that when I play, Saúl is great. When I don’t play, I’m not very good. That’s just how it is,” the player vented, reflecting on the instability of his status within the squad.
Physical challenge and the fight for a spot
The midfielder admitted that a lack of minutes affects his on-field performance, making the physical recovery process slower. However, he reinforced that with a run of training sessions and matches, he expects to return to the high level that established him as an important player. Saúl also praised the quality of the current squad, acknowledging the intense competition he faces daily at the Ninho do Urubu training ground.
Libertadores expectations
Despite the uncertainty regarding his future, Saúl may receive a golden opportunity soon. With Jorginho confirmed out and Evertton Araújo likely sidelined due to injury, a path could open for the Spaniard in the Libertadores. He will, however, need to overcome direct competition from Lucas Paquetá and Erick Pulgar, both of whom are returning from suspension.
