Saudi soccer redefines its transfer market strategy, prioritizing sustainability and young talent after years of billion-dollar spending, marking the end of an era.

The global soccer landscape is witnessing a remarkable transformation in the Roshn Saudi League. That colossal purchasing power that emerged in the summer of 2023, attracting dozens of global stars with record-breaking figures, is now realigning.

After a period of massive investments, the Saudi league is entering a new phase, characterized by expense rationalization and a strategic reorganization of priorities, while still maintaining ambition for major signings.

The most recent transfer market window, in the summer of 2026, clearly illustrates this shift. Saudi clubs’ spending on player acquisitions saw a decrease to approximately $407 million, representing a 26.3% reduction compared to 2025.

This is the season with the lowest investment since the project to attract top talent began, signaling a turnaround in its approach.

Financial Readjustment and New Vision

The initial phase of the project prioritized media impact and the marketing value of the athletes. Now, the central question is whether the team truly needs the player.

This evolution means that the decrease in spending does not reflect a loss of ambition, but rather a desire to build more balanced squads, avoid unnecessary signings, and manage contracts and salaries with a long-term perspective.

The focus is shifting towards younger players, capable of offering technical performance for many years, instead of exclusively relying on big names already in the advanced stages of their careers.

Strategic Investments and Star Departures

The new landscape does not mean a complete closure of the Roshn Saudi League coffers, but rather greater selectivity in the use of its financial power.

Al-Hilal, for example, demonstrated this strategy by signing Brazilian Gabriel Martinelli, 25, for around 65 million euros, one of the biggest deals of the period.

This acquisition aligns with a clear vision of team building and lasting sporting investment, not just adding another name to the list of stars.

In parallel, the summer of 2026 saw the departure of prominent names that marked the league in previous years, such as Karim Benzema, Riyad Mahrez, and Fabinho.

This movement points to a reduced dependence on veteran players with exorbitant salaries.

The reassessment of club needs reflects a transition from the phase of building the league’s global image to a stage more focused on sustainability, competitiveness, and the development of local talent.

Impact on the Local Scene and League’s Future

This change in strategy is intrinsically linked to a larger objective: to grant more space and opportunities for the development of Saudi players.

In recent years, questions have arisen about how the intensity of foreign signings could impact local talent.

The next stage of the Roshn Saudi League will not be measured by the volume of signings or the total amount spent, but rather by its ability to convert these investments into stronger teams, a more balanced competition, and growing appreciation for the league.

Thus, the reduction in transfer values should not be interpreted as a setback for the Saudi project, but rather as a transition to a more mature phase.

A phase in which signing a world-class player ceases to be an end in itself and becomes a means to meet the specific needs of the team and the project.

While billions dictated the tone in the beginning of attracting stars, the new motto appears to be:

The “smart choice”: fewer signings, more precise spending, focus on younger ages and clearly defined needs, while of course maintaining the ability to make a difference when the right player emerges.

In essence, it’s the end of the era of:

“Who pays more?”

And the beginning of a new era that asks:

“Who knows how to spend better?”
