Leozinho, of Athletico, celebrates turnaround and reflects on his journey from futsal to the Brazilian Serie A
An unlikely hero in Athletico-PR‘s 2-1 victory over São Paulo, forward Leozinho is experiencing a special moment this season. The 23-year-old scored the two goals that secured the comeback for the Furacão in the 19th round of the Brazilian Serie A, celebrating not only his performance on the pitch but also the triumph of a unique journey that took him from the pinnacle of futsal to the main stage of Brazilian soccer.
From Futsal Glory to a New Start on the Pitch
The decision to trade the indoor courts for the grass three years ago was seen by many as an act of madness. Leozinho, who was twice named the best U-23 player in the world in futsal (2019 and 2020), was at the peak of his sporting career when he chose to start from scratch in professional soccer.
“I always dreamed of being a field soccer player, but my path began in futsal. When I was at my peak, I decided to take the opportunity to make the switch. Many people called me crazy, saying I was doing something foolish,” the forward recalled in an interview after the match.
Leozinho‘s gamble began in 2023, with stints at Hercílio Luz (Serie D) and Ituano (Serie B), before arriving at Athletico-PR at the start of 2025. The foundation he built in futsal, featuring quick thinking and technical skill in tight spaces, has proven to be a valuable asset in his adaptation to the outdoor game.
Rising Star and Contract Renewal at the Furacão
After a start to the season with limited opportunities, Leozinho has earned his place in the team managed by Odair Hellmann. This confidence was rewarded with a contract extension through 2028, and now, with decisive goals that are helping Athletico-PR compete at the top of the table.
With the win over São Paulo, the Furacão finished the first half of the Brazilian Serie A with 33 points, sitting in third place. The club, which has not had such a positive first half of the season in 13 years, shows that the ambitious goals of Leozinho and the team are aligned toward a potentially historic campaign.
“We always talk internally about not putting limits on our dreams. We dream of reaching the highest possible position. If we can reach first place and become champions, that would be great. If we qualify for the Libertadores, that would be great too. It is about taking it game by game; we know the Brazilian Championship is extremely difficult,” the forward concluded, demonstrating his drive to achieve the best possible results for Athletico.
