Following Flamengo’s 5-1 thrashing of Mirassol, coach Leonardo Jardim harshly criticized Brazilian referees and demanded clarification on current criteria.

Flamengo delivered a convincing performance last Sunday (16th), routing Mirassol 5-1 in a match for the 23rd round of the Brazilian Serie A. However, the atmosphere after the final whistle was marked by the rubro-negro manager’s outburst. In a press conference, Leonardo Jardim momentarily set aside the result to express his frustration with the refereeing decisions, labeling the lack of clear criteria as an obstacle to the development of national football.

The Portuguese coach’s complaint is not isolated and reflects accumulated weariness with critical plays, such as the yellow card issued to a Mirassol defender, which, in Jardim‘s view, should have been a red for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity. For the M360 Team, the episode raises a warning sign about the standardization of rules in the tournament.

Refereeing Under Scrutiny

The core of the discontent lies in the difficulty of conveying a clear directive to the athletes about what is or is not punishable by maximum penalty. The coach highlighted that unpredictability in decisions harms the team’s preparation.

“I won’t single out this question, but sometimes it worries me because I have to send a message to my players, and nowadays I don’t even really know the rules, do I? Because there are situations like this, like today’s, where the last man denies our last man, and that’s normally a straight red, no question.”

Doubts About Criteria

Jardim went further, citing inconsistencies in handball incidents and aggressive plays that, according to him, have been interpreted heterogeneously by the referees.

“Then I see other plays in the box, people playing handball inside the area, and it’s not a penalty. I see others elbowing and it’s not considered aggression. So I can’t understand the rules, and I’m having a lot of difficulty explaining the rules of football to my players, and nowadays I’m very worried about it, and I don’t think it’s good.”

Balance and Squad Management

Despite the criticism, the coach celebrated Flamengo‘s tactical evolution, which could finally enjoy an uninterrupted period of training, a factor hampered by the long break during the World Cup. The Portuguese coach avoided complacency after the rout, advocating for focus on continuing the work.

The M360 Team observes that Jardim‘s discourse is aimed at keeping the squad shielded from emotional fluctuations. The main objective is to maintain balance, treating the positive streak as a result of dedication in training, without allowing the group to ignore the lessons learned during the more pressured moments experienced weeks ago. Mengão‘s next challenge will be crucial to solidify their climb in the league standings.
