Léo Ortiz analyzes Flamengo’s upcoming matches this season, expresses disappointment over Arrascaeta’s injury, and previews the decisive clashes against Estudiantes in the Copa Libertadores.
The atmosphere at Ninho do Urubu is one of total focus heading into the final stretch of the season. In a press conference held this Thursday (Aug 1), defender Léo Ortiz spoke candidly about Flamengo’s objectives across all competitions.
In addition to discussing the upcoming international fixtures, the defender addressed the intense battle at the top of the Brazilian Serie A table and commented on the impact of recent absences in the squad.
The weight of Arrascaeta’s absence
One of the most delicate moments of the interview came when Léo Ortiz lamented the injury suffered by midfielder Arrascaeta. The defender emphasized the Uruguayan’s importance but expressed confidence in the depth of the squad to fill the gap.
Of course, we are very sad because of the form he was in and his importance to the group, not just on the pitch. Off the pitch, he will still be able to help us with his leadership. But naturally, we are losing a great player.
The defender also recalled recent examples of resilience from the group, citing his own injury history and the recovery of teammates like Pedro.
Last year, I was out for a good part of the season, Pedro was too, and others stepped up and took those spots. They were just as important as those who had been playing. I am sure we have a very strong group that will get the job done even with these losses.
Total focus on the top of the Brazilian Serie A
Leading the Brazilian Serie A table with a narrow three-point lead over Palmeiras, Flamengo knows there is no room for error in defending the top spot.
For Léo Ortiz, mental consistency will be the key to keeping the club on top until the end of the tournament, requiring maximum intensity in every round.
The goal today is to maintain this lead and, hopefully, build an advantage. We know it’s very difficult; I always say the margin between Flamengo and Palmeiras at the top is very slim. We can’t let our guard down, and we can’t assume victories will come naturally.
Expectations for the battle in the Libertadores
The road to eternal glory brings a major continental challenge. Flamengo will face Estudiantes, from Argentina, in two electrifying matches for a spot in the Copa Libertadores semifinals.
Analyzing the opponent, Léo Ortiz highlighted the hostile atmosphere typical of matches in Argentina and pointed to striker Guido Carrillo as the main offensive threat for the La Plata side.
We need the right mindset against Estudiantes. The first leg, in particular, will be a very, very difficult and physical game. We’ve experienced this atmosphere before and managed to advance, but it was a very tight contest.
The training period provided by the FIFA Date break is seen by the squad as a strategic asset. The coaching staff is using the time to adjust tactical details, recover players physically, and recharge energy levels for the marathon of decisive matches that will define Flamengo’s success this year.
