Midfielder Jorginho, a standout for Flamengo, recalled being rejected by Palmeiras during his childhood, poked fun at the rival regarding the Club World Cup, and looked ahead to new decisive clashes this season.
A past filled with rejections in football often serves as the ultimate fuel for great careers.
That exact narrative drives midfielder Jorginho, one of the pillars of the Flamengo squad.
During a recent appearance on the talk show The Noite, hosted by Danilo Gentili on SBT,
the player opened up about an old grievance involving Palmeiras
and did not hesitate to weigh in on the classic controversy surrounding the Club World Cup.
The historic revenge in Europe
The history between the midfielder and the São Paulo club began long before the European or South American pitches.
When he was between 12 and 13 years old, the player tried his luck in the youth categories of the green-and-white team,
but ended up being cut after trials.
Years later, already established in international football,
destiny set up an unusual reunion in the Club World Cup final in February 2022,
when he was playing for Chelsea.
On that occasion, the English side got the better of the Brazilians,
providing a remarkable outcome for the athlete.
Jorginho stated:
It felt a bit sweeter, mainly because they closed the doors on me back then, right? I went for trials and it didn’t work out. After everything you go through, leaving a small town, you get all the way there and run into the team that tried you out and said no, and you end up winning.
The European perspective on the intercontinental tournament
During the chat, the naturalized Italian player also commented
on how clubs from the Old Continent view the competition organized by FIFA.
According to him, although an institutional weight exists,
Europeans traditionally place the Champions League on a higher level of priority.
To overcome this cultural difference,
manager Thomas Tuchel adopted a curious strategy before the 2022 final.
The German coach showed videos of the warm welcome
and the Palmeiras fans’ celebration to make the European group aware
of the scale and meaning of the match for South Americans.
Controversy and current rivalry in Brazilian football
Steering clear of no controversies,
when directly asked by the host if the São Paulo club holds a Club World Cup title —
a reference to the 1951 Copa Rio —, Jorginho went straight to the point
and drew laughs from the audience by answering negatively.
The statement further fuels the interstate rivalry
that dominates the current Brazilian football scene.
At Flamengo, the relationship with the paulista rival has gained intense chapters recently.
The Rio de Janeiro club surpassed the team managed by Abel Ferreira
in direct disputes for the Brazilian Serie A and the Copa Libertadores.
With the Gávea club leading the Brazilian Serie A table and alive in the hunt for new continental trophies,
the fans’ expectation is that Jorginho‘s experience and talent
will make the difference in a potential new final against the alviverdes.
