Despite a 2-1 victory over Bragantino, coach Leonardo Jardim acknowledged that Flamengo needs to improve its goal-conversion rate for upcoming matches.
Flamengo secured another three important points in the Brazilian Serie A this past Sunday (20), defeating Red Bull Bragantino 2-1. However, the scoreline could have been more lopsided had it not been for the attacking inefficiency of the Rubro-Negro. Coach Leonardo Jardim, in a post-match interview, admitted that offensive performance remains a point of focus in his work.
The Portuguese coach stated:
Any coach wants a more effective team, but my line of work is creation. After that, it’s up to the players. Some are more effective, others less so, but I’m sure they all give their best.
Match Analysis and Offensive Effectiveness
Flamengo’s dominance over the São Paulo team was clear, especially in the first half. The Rubro-Negro created numerous opportunities but was hampered by imprecise shots and an inspired performance from goalkeeper Tiago Volpi. Jardim emphasized that play creation is the team’s engine but acknowledged that finishing needs to improve.
Leonardo Jardim pointed out:
On the other side, there’s a goalkeeper; today, Arrascaeta hit the post. There are always situations that can happen. Today we created and scored two, but we could have created less, scored only one, and I would be here regretting the draw. The more we create, the more situations we will finish.
The scoring was opened in the 12th minute when Carrascal crossed to Varela, who infiltrated between the defenders and sent the ball into the net.
In the second half, in the 25th minute, Pedro extended the lead after a header deflection from Jorginho on a corner kick by Arrascaeta.
Bragantino managed to pull one back in the 40th minute with Ignacio Sosa but could not prevent the Rio de Janeiro team’s triumph.
Now, the Flamengo squad will have a crucial preparation period. Due to the FIFA International Window, the team gets 18 days of rest before its next commitment. Their return to the field is scheduled for October 8th against Santos at Vila Belmiro for the 29th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.
This time will be used by the technical staff to improve shooting and offensive transitions.
