After a long hiatus due to depression, former Flamengo center-back Alejandro Donatti has made a surprising and inspiring comeback to the pitch in Argentina at 39 years old.
In a remarkable return to the game, experienced Argentine center-back Alejandro Donatti, a former Flamengo player, has ended a three-year break from professional football. At 39, the defender has overcome a complex battle with mental health issues, including depression and panic attacks, which had previously led him to announce his retirement. His return to the pitch with Boca Unidos, the club where his career began, stands as a powerful symbol of resilience.
Donatti‘s decision to resume his career serves as a message of hope and courage, especially in an era where mental health in sports has become a critical topic of conversation. The player is not only back on the field but is doing so with the determination of someone who has faced and won a challenging personal battle.
The Journey Back to the Pitch
Alejandro Donatti made his return earlier this month during a match in the Torneo Federal A, the third tier of the Argentine Championship. Boca Unidos defeated Atlético Escobar 3-0, with the former Flamengo defender making an appearance in the final moments of the game. His last professional outing before his hiatus was in July 2023, while playing for Sarmiento, in a scoreless draw against Banfield.
A Testament to the Struggle
Donatti‘s openness regarding the reasons for his hiatus is a fundamental part of his story. When he first stepped away, he shared his struggles with depression and panic attacks.
It was an advanced depression with panic attacks. The psychiatrist told me I needed to take two pills a day. I’m sharing my story because I know many players go through this. When a player steps onto the field thinking about what people will say about him, something isn’t right. That’s what happened to me after my time at San Lorenzo.
The defender revealed.
Time at Flamengo and Career Peak
Signed by Flamengo in 2016, Donatti had a brief stint with the Rio de Janeiro club, making only 11 appearances. During that period, he shared the locker room with talents like Vini Jr and Diego Ribas, before moving to Tijuana in Mexico in 2017. The peak of his career came at Racing, where he won two Argentine Championship titles, solidifying his reputation in Argentine football. His career also includes spells with Tigre, Rosario Central, and San Lorenzo, among others.
The Joy of a Fresh Start
Following the Boca Unidos victory, Donatti’s joy was palpable. The player expressed his relief and satisfaction at being back in the environment he loves so much.
It’s a huge joy. I needed to return to a place where I felt comfortable. I want to experience this phase in a different way, help my teammates, and enjoy every moment.
The defender stated, celebrating his return.
The comeback of Alejandro Donatti is more than just another event on the Argentine football calendar; it is a powerful reminder of the complexities athletes face and the importance of mental health. His story of overcoming adversity offers an inspiring perspective on the human capacity to face challenges and pursue a new beginning. The M360 Team applauds the athlete’s courage and wishes him success in this new chapter of his career at Boca Unidos.
