With a thrashing of Mirassol, Flamengo takes the lead in goal difference and increases the pressure on Palmeiras in the Brazilian Serie A title race.
Flamengo‘s dominant 5-1 victory over Mirassol this Sunday (16) not only boosted the team in the Brazilian Serie A standings but also moved them ahead of their main rival in the race for the title. The Rubro-Negro now boasts the best goal difference in the competition, surpassing the former leader Palmeiras, even with one game in hand.
The difference in goal differential, an important tie-breaker in the championship, reflects the offensive strength and defensive solidity demonstrated by the Rio de Janeiro side. While Flamengo has scored 44 goals and conceded 19 (for a total goal difference of +25), Palmeiras has 40 goals for and 19 against (a difference of +21). This numerical superiority, coupled with a game pending, intensifies the pressure on the São Paulo-based club during the final stretch of the tournament.
Mengão Closes in on the Lead and Dreams of the Title
The squad managed by Leonardo Jardim has reached 45 points in 22 matches, sitting just three points behind Palmeiras, who have 48 points from 23 games. Palmeiras‘ loss to Fluminense in the previous round opened the door for Flamengo, which capitalized on the opportunity to close the gap and solidify its status as a strong contender for the Brazilian Serie A title.
The possibility of taking the outright lead becomes even more tangible with the rescheduled match against Mirassol, which has not yet been given a set date. If they win, Flamengo could overtake Palmeiras, depending also on the result of the direct head-to-head matchup between the two teams in the second half of the season.
Upcoming Challenges and Total Focus on the Season
Before turning their attention back to the Brazilian Serie A, Flamengo has a decisive commitment in the Copa Libertadores. On Wednesday (19), the Rubro-Negro faces Cruzeiro at the Maracanã for the second leg of the Round of 16. The 1-1 draw in the first leg leaves the spot in the quarterfinals wide open, with the possibility of a penalty shootout.
On Saturday (22), the focus returns to the Brazilian championship with another clash against Cruzeiro, this time at Mineirão, for the 24th round. The team seeks to maintain its good form and consolidate its position in the domestic title race, all while competing for the Libertadores trophy. Coverage of the matches will be available on Rede Globo and Paramount+.
