Flamengo steamrolls Mirassol and closes in on Brazilian Serie A lead
Flamengo displayed overwhelming power on Sunday (16th) with a 5-1 thrashing of Mirassol at Maiaõ stadium, in a match valid for the 23rd round of the Brazilian Serie A. The emphatic victory allowed the Rubro-Negro to narrow the gap on leaders Palmeiras, reaching 45 points and trailing by just three.
With a game in hand, the team managed by Leonardo Jardim has the chance to tie the Verdão in points in their next outing, increasing the pressure during the final stretch of the competition.
The lopsided scoreline featured goals from Carrascal, Luiz Araújo (who scored against his boyhood club), Pedro (with a brace), and Samuel Lino. Mirassol managed a consolation goal through João Victor, but it was not enough to contain Flamengo’s superiority.
Dominant First Half
From the opening minutes, Flamengo dictated the pace of the game. In the 22nd minute, after a rebound from goalkeeper Walter, Gonzalo Plata laid the ball off for Jorge Carrascal, who calmly opened the scoring.
The Rio de Janeiro side maintained control, creating several chances despite some struggles with clinical finishing. Mirassol threatened on isolated plays, but the Flamengo defense, led by standout performer Rossi, held firm.
Relentless Attack in the Second Half
Flamengo’s superiority translated into more goals in the second half. Seven minutes in, a beautiful passing sequence resulted in the second goal, with Luiz Araújo finding the back of the net.
Shortly after, Pedro made it 3-0, effectively putting the game out of reach. The number 9 would strike again to secure the fourth goal. To round out the rout, Samuel Lino added the fifth. Mirassol finally pulled one back with João Victor in the closing minutes.
The Flamengo squad showed great offensive efficiency, with a convincing performance that reaffirms their ambitions in the championship. The victory injects confidence for the upcoming challenges, including the fight for the Brazilian Serie A lead and the decisive clash in the Copa Libertadores.
