With the transfer deadline passed, Flamengo turns to its youth academy, adding prospects like Lorran and Diego Reyes to its Libertadores squad for the decisive round of 16 clash against Cruzeiro.

Flamengo has officially updated its 50-man squad list for the Copa Libertadores round of 16. The move comes as the club was unable to finalize new signings before the transfer window closed, shifting the focus to internal options, including promising young talent.

The most notable addition, as announced by CONMEBOL, is the inclusion of Lorran, the promising 20-year-old midfielder. Along with other academy products, he joins the squad set to face Cruzeiro in the continental knockout stage, representing a strategic bet by the coaching staff led by Leonardo Jardim given the lack of external reinforcements.

Fresh Faces in the Squad

In addition to Lorran, who returned from a loan spell at Pisa and quickly convinced Leonardo Jardim with his performance, the Rubro-Negro’s Libertadores roster now features four other young players.

Mexican midfielder Diego Reyes, 18, was also included, raising expectations among fans. The group of newcomers is rounded out by three Under-17 players: midfielder João Vitor and forwards Isaac Gomes and Luiz Guilherme, all 17.

Players Dropped from the List

To make room for the new names, Flamengo had to remove five players from the squad. Among the departures are the transfers of forward Ryan Roberto, sold to Shakhtar Donetsk, and defender Da Mata, who moved to Konyaspor.

Defensive midfielder Kaio Nóbrega, who joined Estoril, defender Muñoz, and fullback Gabriel Amâncio were also removed from the continental tournament list, reflecting recent transfer market activity and squad adjustments.

No New Signings

The decision to include youth players came after Flamengo failed to finalize new signings before the CONMEBOL deadline for the round of 16. The transfer window closed without the club’s targets being acquired in time for the high-stakes matchups.

This situation forced the front office and coaching staff to seek solutions within the club, emphasizing the importance of the academy in rounding out the Libertadores squad. The bet on talents like Lorran—who has been earning playing time and the trust of Jardim—and other academy prospects highlights Flamengo‘s strategy of strengthening the team with internal resources.

This approach will be put to the test in the upcoming knockout ties against Cruzeiro, where the performance of the newly registered players could prove crucial to the club’s Libertadores ambitions. With the coaching staff closely monitoring their development, the expectation is that these players will bring new energy and tactical options to the team.

The responsibility now rests on the current group, which faces the mission of securing a spot in the quarterfinals, banking on a blend of experience and youth to overcome the challenges of the continental knockout bracket.
