Flamengo president Luiz Eduardo Baptista, known as Bap, has filed a lawsuit against Vasco da Gama president Pedrinho following recent harsh public criticism.
The relationship between the leadership of two of the biggest clubs in Brazilian soccer has reached a breaking point behind the scenes. The trigger for the legal action was a series of statements made by Pedrinho, who personally attacked Bap, leading to a lawsuit seeking damages for defamation.
The dispute intensified after the Flamengo executive requested that the ANRESF (National Agency for the Regularization and Sustainability of Soccer) conduct a detailed analysis of the financial health of the São Januário club. Flamengo’s move is intended to understand how their rival maintains a constant flow of high-cost signings despite a landscape of accumulated debts.
The escalation of the conflict
Tensions between the executives flared up when Pedrinho, while boarding the Vasco squad, did not mince words when criticizing Bap. The Vasco leader questioned the ethics of the Flamengo executive, accusing him of hypocrisy regarding issues related to equality in the Brazilian Serie A.
— I am talking about BAP the person. Not the institution (Flamengo), okay? I am talking specifically about BAP. He is unprincipled, arrogant, conceited, haughty, and hypocritical. Hypocritical because he uses the phrase: “I am doing this for the good of the Brazilian Serie A. It is for the Brazilian Serie A to have equality, a legal process.” That is, when it does not concern the club he represents —
Pedrinho’s arguments
In his statement, Pedrinho suggested a contradiction in Bap’s behavior. The Vasco president pointed out that, during discussions within Libra regarding the division of TV broadcasting rights, the Flamengo executive prioritizes his own club’s exclusive interests, ignoring, in his view, the vision of a balanced championship for everyone.
— Because when it concerns the club he represents, such as the division of shares in Libra, he is the first to leave, sit in his chair, and say that he will fight for Flamengo’s rights. Why doesn’t he think about the Brazilian Serie A? Does it not serve for that? Does it only serve when it’s not his team? Or when it’s other teams? So, he is a hypocrite —
Financial context
The focus of the friction lies in Flamengo’s questioning of their rival’s financial management. The Rubro-Negro club is seeking transparency, especially following Vasco’s moves in the transfer market involving significant figures, such as the recent signings of players from Argentine soccer, which totaled approximately R$ 60 million.
While the legal battle continues in court, the focus of Bap and the rest of the M360 Team remains on the pitch. Flamengo is preparing for the decisive derby against Botafogo, which takes place this Sunday (30) at 4:00 PM, at the Maracanã, for the Brazilian Serie A.
