Flamengo is working behind the scenes to determine the future of left-back Matías Viña. After being sidelined by River Plate, the club’s board is seeking a new destination for the player.

The situation involving Matías Viña has taken a dramatic turn in South American football. Loaned to River Plate at the beginning of 2026, the Uruguayan is now facing a contract impasse. After being forced to train away from the main squad in Buenos Aires, the player has become a complication for Flamengo’s planning, as the club looks to facilitate a new transfer to avoid high salary costs, estimated at around R$ 1 million per month.

The conflict between the clubs arose due to a performance clause in the current agreement. River Plate, fearing that reaching the 50% match threshold would trigger a mandatory $5 million (approximately R$ 27 million) buyout clause, opted to freeze the player’s involvement. Flamengo, for its part, is maintaining a firm stance: they will not accept an early return of the fullback without the payment of the stipulated release fee, leaving Viña’s future in a legal and sporting deadlock.

The fullback’s history at Gávea

Signed from Roma in early 2024 for R$ 43 million, Viña arrived in Rio de Janeiro as a starter. However, a serious knee injury suffered in August of that same year sidelined him for ten months. Upon his return, the competitive landscape of the squad had shifted drastically, with the player losing his spot in the depth chart to Alex Sandro and Ayrton Lucas under the management of Filipe Luís.

Perspective on performance

In a recent analysis, the M360 Team highlighted that, despite some inconsistency, the fullback possesses technical quality superior to what his current situation suggests.

“It is hard to believe that Viña does not have the level to play for Flamengo. The Uruguayan was inconsistent when given opportunities, but he had some strong performances wearing the club’s jersey,” noted the M360 Team.

Impact and next steps

With 32 appearances for Flamengo and a resume that includes major titles such as the Libertadores and the Brazilian Serie A, Viña has market interest, but his high salary acts as a hurdle in negotiations. While the board seeks a definitive solution, the fullback remains without a clear path to the pitch, waiting for the football department to finalize a new loan or a permanent sale to end this troubled cycle in Argentina.
