Flamengo defeated Fluminense 84-77, securing its 50th Carioca Basketball Championship title and maintaining an impressive dominance with 19 consecutive state crowns.
Flamengo‘s basketball team reaffirmed its dominance on the state stage by winning the Carioca Basketball Championship for the 19th consecutive time. In an action-packed final at the Maracanãzinho arena, the Rubro-Negro team beat rival Fluminense by a score of 84 to 77.
The victory not only preserved the squad’s undefeated run in the tournament, but also set a historic milestone for the sport. With this result, the club reached the impressive mark of 50 state titles in its history.
The triumph consolidates the great form of the team known as Orgulho da Nação (Pride of the Nation), which relied on decisive performances from veteran players and the triumphant return of key pieces to dictate the pace of the game until the final buzzer.
A tight game decided in the final quarter
The decisive matchup began with an advantage for the Rubro-Negro side, which closed the first quarter ahead 22-18 and went into halftime leading 33-31. Fluminense fought back in the third quarter, closing the gap to just a single point.
The rivalry game was decided in the fourth quarter, when Flamengo‘s offense found an efficient groove. With a 27-21 run in the final ten minutes, the team secured a comfortable seven-point victory.
Individual highlights and MVP award
Among the top performers in the matchup, forward DG finished as the game’s top scorer with 18 points. His offensive output was vital in keeping the lead during the most critical moments of the final.
Another key figure was point guard Yago, named the tournament’s MVP. Back with the team after four seasons in European basketball — with stints at Ulm, Estrela Vermelha, and Virtus Bologna —, the player reclaimed the leading role he had previously displayed during the 2020/21 NBB title run.
“Reaching our 50th state title confirms the strength of a winning project and the tradition of Rubro-Negro basketball in the country.”
Focus turns to NBB debut
With little time to celebrate, the team quickly shifted focus to the national schedule. Flamengo‘s next game comes this Sunday (18), when they face Bauru at Maracanãzinho at 11 a.m. in their NBB season opener.
Under head coach Demétrius Ferracciú, who replaced Sergio Hernández, the squad faces an intense upcoming schedule. On the following Tuesday (20), the team returns to the court at home for a rivalry match against Botafogo.
