Filipe Luís looks back at the controversy involving Pedro and emphasizes that collective discipline at Flamengo always came above any individuality during the 2025 season.

Former full-back and current head coach Filipe Luís has spoken out once again about the friction with forward Pedro behind the scenes at Flamengo. In a recent interview with the AFP news agency, the Rubro-Negro manager strongly defended the disciplinary measures taken last year, emphasizing that no star in the squad holds privileges that could compromise the harmony and internal rules of the institution.

The drastic decision occurred in July 2025, when the coach chose to drop the number 9 for the match against São Paulo in the Brazilian Serie A. At the time, the player’s behavior during training sessions was publicly criticized by the coaching staff, generating major repercussion in the sports press and among Nação fans. Even while dealing with a high-performing player with whom he had recently shared the pitch, the demand for professionalism prevailed.

Strictness behind the scenes and focus on winning

The transition from player to locker room manager required the establishment of clear limits, especially when coaching former teammates. For Filipe Luís, Mengão‘s sporting success—later crowned with the Copa Libertadores and national tournament trophies—came precisely from the ability to correct behavioral deviations without hesitation or fear of media backlash.

Filipe Luís pointed out:

“No one is more important than the team. A clear principle had been broken. I made a difficult decision”

Even after the issue was resolved and Pedro was subsequently reintegrated—becoming a key piece in the Rio de Janeiro club’s historic achievements—the coach remained firm in his stance. This unyielding approach solidified the manager’s reputation that respect for technical hierarchy is non-negotiable, regardless of a player’s historical weight within the team.

New career horizons

After concluding his winning cycle in Brazilian football, Filipe Luís took on new challenges in Europe by managing Monaco, seeking to expand his profile on the international stage. The relentless pursuit of titles and tactical rigor continue to guide the professional’s work philosophy, as he prefers to look to the future rather than rest his legacy on past glories.

His journey at the helm of Flamengo served as a definitive laboratory to refine his identity on the bench. With a mindset focused on constant evolution and high-level competitiveness, the coach demonstrates that strict demands for discipline will remain the foundation of his career in European football.
