Corinthians is facing an unprecedented crisis behind the scenes: FIFA has imposed its fourth transfer ban on the club, this time due to outstanding debts from the signing of midfielder Charles.
The situation for Corinthians in sporting courts reached a critical point this Tuesday (21). The club was notified by FIFA of a new registration ban, bringing their total to four active punishments—three international and one national. The latest hurdle stems from a 6.25 million BRL debt owed to Danish club Midtjylland regarding the transfer rights of midfielder Charles.
This sequence of sanctions completely stalls any ambitions the club’s board had for the current transfer window. With the squad in urgent need of adjustments for the remainder of the season, Timão finds its hands tied, unable to register new signings until they settle the financial arrears accumulated over recent months.
The escalation of Timão’s punishments
The club’s financial instability has turned into a legal snowball. The punishment triggered by Midtjylland is set to last for three transfer windows. The scenario reflects a turbulent two-month period, during which the club saw its international credibility shaken by successive payment delays.
The recent history is concerning for the fans. It all began on May 21, with a 7.7 million BRL debt owed to Philadelphia Union for José Martínez. Shortly after, in July, FIFA imposed a second ban and a 1.16 million BRL fine for failure to comply with agreements involving several clubs, including New York City FC.
The domestic ban
Beyond the barriers imposed by football’s global governing body, Corinthians is also dealing with strict enforcement from the CBF. On July 18, a six-month suspension was decreed due to a delay in an 8 million BRL installment owed through the CNRD.
“After admitting financial inability to pay the 8 million BRL installment agreed upon with the CNRD, Corinthians had its renegotiation request rejected and was punished with a six-month transfer ban.”
The club attempted to justify the delay by citing revenue losses, but the argument was rejected by Cuiabá, the primary creditor, who alleged bad faith in the management’s actions, keeping the restriction in place.

Although the origins of the debts vary, the effect on Corinthians is the same: total paralysis in the transfer market. The board is now racing against time in a legal obstacle course.
