FIFA proposes commercial giant, UEFA threatens boycott!
FIFA has unveiled an ambitious plan to establish a new company tasked with managing the commercial and operational rights of its competitions. Valued at approximately $18 billion (R$ 102.5 billion), the initiative involves the sale of minority stakes to private investors.
The proposal, however, has already triggered a strong reaction from UEFA, which is threatening a boycott, arguing that “the soul and governance of football are not assets to be traded.”
Details of the FIFA Proposal
The creation of the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) aims to consolidate events and commercial operations under a new structure. The world football governing body would maintain majority control and authority over sporting governance, ensuring that decisions regarding competitions, the match calendar, and regulations remain under its purview.
To secure approval from its 211 member associations, FIFA is offering an attractive financial package: an immediate $10 billion investment, with additional, progressive funds for special projects and future cycles, culminating in $24 million per association for the 2035-2038 cycle.
UEFA’s Reaction and Next Steps
UEFA, the primary governing body for European football, has expressed strong disapproval of FIFA’s plan. In an official statement, the organization criticized the lack of transparency and warned that the proposal crosses an unacceptable line. The European body considers the initiative an attack on the sport’s governance and has signaled a possible boycott.
The final decision regarding the creation of the FFE will depend on the support of the majority of member associations and internal approvals by the FIFA Council. The outcome of this dispute promises to shape the commercial and administrative future of global football.
