Cruzeiro and Flamengo are setting their lineups with distinct focuses for Saturday’s Brazilian Serie A clash.
After intense Copa Libertadores battles, Cruzeiro and Flamengo will meet again this Saturday (22), this time for the 24th round of the Brazilian Championship. The match, scheduled for 8:30 PM (Brasília time) at Mineirão, will see different tactical approaches and objectives for both teams.
Absences and Rested Players Mark Cruzeiro’s Lineup
Cruzeiro, currently in fifth place in the Brazilian Serie A, 12 points behind league leader Palmeiras, is focusing its attention on the Copa do Brasil. Next Tuesday (25), the team coached by Artur Jorge will face archrival Atlético-MG in the quarterfinals.
Given this scenario, some players are expected to be rested against Flamengo. Center-forward Kaio Jorge is one of the players with a low chance of starting, while Gerson and Matheus Pereira, who were previously rested, might return. Defender Jonathan Jesus is a confirmed absence, suspended for accumulating three yellow cards.
Flamengo Banks on Strongest Available Squad
In contrast, Flamengo aims to field its best available squad. Free from Copa do Brasil commitments midweek, the Rubro-Negro might get a breather in their schedule. However, the lineup won’t be the same as in the Copa Libertadores. Defender Léo Pereira remained in Rio de Janeiro due to muscle fatigue.
At right-back, coach Leonardo Jardim will maintain the rotation: Varela will play in the Brazilian Serie A. There’s also the possibility of both full-backs playing, with Varela on the left to give Ayrton Lucas a rest, as he has accumulated many matches. Erick Pulgar and Gerson might also start on the bench due to fatigue.

Expectations for the clash are high, especially for Flamengo, which seeks a victory to theoretically take the provisional lead of the Brazilian Serie A.
