Changes in the Second Half
The Brazilian Serie A is about to gain a new pace. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has confirmed that semi-automatic offside, already seen in international matches, will be implemented starting from the 20th round of the second half of the season. But the news doesn’t stop there: a series of other rules, inspired by those used in the World Cup, are expected to take effect from the 23rd round.
The entity’s main objective is clear: to make games more dynamic and combat the well-known “time-wasting” that often harms the spectacle. The idea is to increase playing time, ensuring more excitement for the fans and valuing the sport.
What Changes on the Field?
The new guidelines aim to optimize game time in various ways. One of the proposals is a five-second limit for taking throw-ins and goal kicks. If the time is exceeded, possession will be turned over. Substitutions will also have stricter control, with the incoming player needing a minute off the field, and VAR intervention will be expanded to cover corner kicks and second yellow cards.
It is important to note that clubs participating in Conmebol competitions, such as the Libertadores and Sudamericana, will already be familiar with these rules, as they will apply them even before their implementation in the Brazilian Serie A. An official meeting with the clubs is scheduled for August 10, where the rules will be discussed and formalized.
Professionalization of Refereeing
In addition to on-field changes, the CBF reaffirms its commitment to the professionalization of refereeing. The Refereeing Committee, now under the command of Sandro Meira Ricci and Pericles Bassols, is focusing on improving the 72 referees under professional contracts. Investments in health, performance, and continuous training are a priority.
The entity also emphasizes the urgency in developing new refereeing talents, seeking to renew the ranks with professionals between 25 and 35 years old. The goal is to ensure increasingly qualified and impartial officiating on Brazilian fields.
The adoption of these new rules represents a significant step towards modernizing Brazilian football, aligning the Brazilian Serie A with international practices and elevating the technical level and entertainment value of the matches. Fans can expect a more electrifying second half of the season with fewer unnecessary interruptions.
