The Brazilian Championship, a stage for passion and emotion every weekend, is taking a giant leap toward modernization and sporting fairness. Starting this Saturday (25), with the beginning of the 20th round, domestic football will experience a true revolution in officiating with the implementation of semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) in all Serie A matches. This technology, already used in major international competitions, promises to put an end to the long waits and controversial calls that so often frustrate fans.
SAOT arrives to enhance VAR operations, making offside calls faster, more accurate, and more transparent. Following a period of testing and meticulous preparation by the CBF, the system will be present in all ten matches of the round, marking the beginning of a new era for the sport in Brazil. The first matches to feature this innovation will be Athletico-PR vs. Internacional, Santos vs. Chapecoense, and Vasco vs. Mirassol.
The Technology Behind the Precision
Behind the speed and accuracy of the semi-automated offside system lies a sophisticated set of tools. High-precision cameras, strategically positioned in the stadiums, capture the position of all players on the field in real-time. Simultaneously, a sensor inside the ball tracks the exact moment of the pass. This data is processed by advanced software that generates a three-dimensional reconstruction of the play.
This 3D representation greatly facilitates the analysis by the video assistant referee team, which now has unprecedented visual support to validate or rule out an offside. “This is just one more step in a much broader transformation of Brazilian officiating, involving technology, education, professionalization, and innovation. Starting July 25th, we will begin a new era for Brazilian football, reaffirming the CBF‘s commitment to excellence and the continuous evolution of our sport,” declared Netto Góes, director of the CBF Referees Commission. It is important to note that, despite the technological advancement, the final decision on the play remains in the hands of the referees, who validate the data generated by the system.
Testing and Adaptation: A Comprehensive Process
The implementation of SAOT in the Brazilian Serie A was not an overnight process. The CBF Referees Commission conducted rigorous testing during youth matches and Serie A games following the break for the 2026 World Cup. The goal was to calibrate equipment, train referees and operators, and ensure the flawless operation of the system in all Brazilian stadiums.
Arenas hosting Serie A matches underwent significant infrastructure adjustments. Installing specific cameras and integrating them with VAR operation centers was essential for all clubs to be able to host the new technology. Now that everything is ready, the semi-automated offside becomes a permanent component of VAR in Brazilian football, promising a fairer and more exciting spectacle for passionate fans.
