Goalkeeper Gabriel Brazão chose to remain at Santos at the end of 2025, despite strong interest from Flamengo, who were looking to bolster their goalkeeping position for the following season.

In the Brazilian football landscape, player movement between major clubs is constant, and the end of 2025 was no different for Flamengo. In search of a new goalkeeper to join its 2026 squad, the Rio de Janeiro club turned its attention to Gabriel Brazão, then playing for Santos, following the departure of Matheus Cunha.

Flamengo’s inquiry generated expectations, but negotiations did not progress. The player, valued for his performance at the São Paulo club, demonstrated commitment to continuing his career at Vila Belmiro, frustrating Flamengo‘s plans, which then had to seek other alternatives for the position.

Flamengo’s Inquiry and Brazão’s Decision

Flamengo‘s interest in Gabriel Brazão arose during the squad assembly period for the 2026 season, with the aim of filling the void left by Matheus Cunha. However, the goalkeeper himself, in an interview with the ‘Gonze Neles’ channel, made a point of clarifying his position, reaffirming his commitment to Santos.

I never requested to leave at any point. My focus is on building a victorious history at Santos.

The Release Clause Obstacle

Brazão’s stay on the São Paulo coast was the result of discussions with Santos‘ board of directors, which treated the player as a crucial piece in its project. The black-and-white club showed firmness in not releasing the player, citing the significant release clause for national clubs, set at R$ 370 million, as an impediment to the negotiation.

Impact on Santos and Flamengo’s Search for Another Option

In 2025, Gabriel Brazão was instrumental in Santos‘ campaign to avoid relegation, featuring in 53 matches and solidifying himself as one of the team’s pillars. Given the difficulty in acquiring Brazão, Flamengo had to shift its focus and subsequently finalized the signing of goalkeeper Andrew, in a transaction valued at approximately 1.5 million euros.

Situation Analysis

The complexity of the negotiation was analyzed by the M360 Team. The assessment is that, despite Brazão being a significant signing with great potential, the values demanded by Santos were considered prohibitive. Furthermore, the goalkeeper would have had to compete for the starting spot with Agustín Rossi, one of the key players in the Flamengo squad.

Gabriel Brazão’s decision to remain at Santos and the São Paulo club’s unyielding stance shaped the strategies of both national football giants for the 2026 season. While Brazão remains a valuable asset for Santos, Flamengo directed its investments toward other market options, with Andrew assuming the role of reinforcement for the Rio side’s goalkeeping position. This situation highlights how negotiations for prominent athletes can directly influence clubs’ planning and aspirations.
