Flamengo’s Football Director, José Boto, sheds light on the behind-the-scenes of the transfer window, revealing that the pursuit of Luiz Henrique was never a priority for the Rio de Janeiro club.
Flamengo‘s activity in the transfer market has been the subject of various speculations, and the name of forward Luiz Henrique, currently with Zenit in Russia, was one that circulated behind the scenes at Gávea. However, Football Director José Boto has now publicly addressed the rumors to put an end to the speculation and clarify the Scarlet-Black‘s stance regarding the astronomical figures involved in the potential deal.
According to the director, the Rio de Janeiro club maintained a strategy focused on financial responsibility and long-term planning. Although the forward had been linked to the club, Boto categorically denied that Flamengo had pursued the player’s signing as a primary objective, especially after discovering discrepancies between what was promised by his representatives and the reality presented by the Russian team.
The Official Version on Luiz Henrique
In an interview with ESPN, the director explained that Flamengo‘s interest was focused on players with development potential, aiming to reap benefits in upcoming seasons. Regarding Luiz Henrique, the director was direct:
“We never wanted Luiz Henrique. A possibility was presented to us by people close to him, who expressed a desire for him to join Flamengo under very favorable conditions, not just the price, but also the payment terms. Later, when we spoke with Zenit, none of that was true, and we withdrew.”
Financial Barrier and the End of Negotiations
The negotiation stalled due to the abysmal difference between the demanded valuations. While Flamengo, under the guidance of president Bap, set a ceiling of €25 million, Zenit demanded a fixed €30 million, plus bonuses that would raise the total cost to €35 million. Faced with this demand, the Scarlet-Black board opted not to formalize any offer to the Russian club, prioritizing the financial health of the institution.
New Signings and the Future of the Squad
Without progress in negotiations for high-cost targets like Thiago Almada and Luiz Henrique, Flamengo stuck to its strategy of seeking emerging talents to strengthen the squad managed by the coaching staff. The club finalized the arrivals of 19-year-old Joaquín Freitas and 23-year-old Anthony Valencia. The strategy is to integrate these young athletes so that, in the near future, they can take on leading roles in a squad that is already proving qualified for the season’s challenges.
