Botafogo has intensified negotiations for midfielder Matheus Gonçalves, offering a higher bid than Vasco to secure the former Flamengo player during this transfer window.
The Brazilian football transfer market is entering its most decisive phase. With the transfer window set to close this Friday (August 11), Botafogo has made midfielder Matheus Gonçalves, currently with Saudi Arabian club Al Ahli, their absolute priority to strengthen their squad for the remainder of the season.
The pursuit of the athlete, however, has taken on the characteristics of a Rio de Janeiro derby. Vasco da Gama also formally expressed interest in signing him, but the Alvinegro from General Severiano currently has a more aggressive financial proposal, both in the stipulated value for a future purchase option and in the salary offer to the player.
Negotiation Details and Competition
The proposal submitted by Botafogo is for a loan with a purchase option set at 12 million euros, approximately R$ 71 million (Brazilian Reais). Vasco, on the other hand, presented an offer around 10 million euros (about R$ 59 million). In addition to the difference in the total amount, the Alvinegro club is offering higher wages to the athlete, which has been a significant factor in the negotiations.
“Matheus Gonçalves’ versatility is seen by the Alvinegro board as a key technical advantage, capable of providing solutions both on the wings and in the midfield.”
Background and Expectations
Developed in Flamengo’s youth academy, Matheus Gonçalves arrived in Saudi Arabian football in August 2025. Al Ahli is not opposed to a temporary release, understanding that a return to Brazil could be strategic for the young midfielder’s development. The player, who has previously played for Red Bull Bragantino and even featured for the Rubro-Negro under Filipe Luís in the U-20 team, is now looking for a club where he can regain a leading role.
A decisive meeting scheduled for this Wednesday (August 9) is expected to determine the course of the transaction. According to reporting by the M360 Team, a swift resolution is needed for all documentation to be regularized before the market’s final deadline. The outcome of this negotiation promises to stir the behind-the-scenes movements of Rio de Janeiro’s giants until the very last second of the transfer window.
